Dear All

I am hoping someone out there can help. My daughter sheepishly told me that a Sims expansion didn't work and when I went to look into it I found that her PC was infected with many many viruses. I have run AVG, Housecall, Adaware plus others and it seems to be okay apart from one thing. When I boot up it is painfully slow but gets there in the end, I wonder whether this is because she has msn live messenger? However apart from that when I then use IE (6) it starts to direct to the home page (google.co.uk in this case) but then gets hijacked to this address

http://nwframe.net/fr/?id=us27

I think it then gets further hijaked to http://joutweb.net and then links to www.dinet (which also appears in the bottom status bar). Finally the phrase 'mAniman applet started' (written with the capital A) but IE never seems to find anything and everything is so slow.

I did look up mAniman on Google and got this - what is it all about?

Removed Link

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT COPY AND PASTE THE www.dinet LINK AS IT IMMEDIATELY CAME UP WITH VIRUS DETECTED ON MY PC!!!!!!

I am no programmer but it seems to be to do with Spy Sherriff which I think I had a problem with before. Some colleagues got me to look for .class files (didn't find anything) and to look in 'Processes' but again nothing was seen. The AVG normally picks this up as a Trojan Horse virus and it has the address of C:/Documents and Settings/ etc etc and is a file for my daughter's schoolwork, but I cannot find any of those files there, they are all .exe by the way (I assume that is obvious).

I would be so grateful if you can rid this for me - but go gentle as I am not particularly PC literate!

Many thanks in advance for you help and best wishes for the season

Welcome to Geeks to Go,

We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool, Hijack This. Follow the instructions in step five of this guide, and reply here with your log.

Hi GTG

Firstly on booting up and going into the net via Mozilla Firefox I thought the problem had disappeared but then completely unasked for, IE opens up with the dreaded http://netframe etc and also with AVG finding a trojan virus.

Here is a copy of the log:

OKay done all that-ish.

Did not get the message with killbox that seemed to be okay.

Where I cocked it up was with AVG. I did the scan pressed 'Apply all actions' and then went into the report and there were no reports, so I have scanned again (worringly it found another 3 things!)

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Happy New Years to you as well :whistling:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Hi, back from my travels.

The good news is that the infamous nwframe really seems to have gone - the bad news is that the PC is so slow - 2mins to open IE, there is a constant whirring from the 'box' as if something is always running in the background and typing this is very difficult as there is a gap between pressing the keys and the text appearing - God I am f@@@@d off with this!!!

Here is today's HJT log (thanks as usual)
