This is the rest of the instructions.

Ran the Super AntiSpyware but only on the C: drive. I have other drive partitions on my PC but they were left out of the scan. I hope I did the right thing here.

Here is the logfile after the scan and fix.

OK good. Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [explorer] C:\Documents and Settings\User\w.exe
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} - http://www.popcap.co...aploader_v6.cab
O23 - Service: COM+ Messages - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe" -e mc-110-12-0001411 (file missing)

Exit HijackThis when done. Reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

Also, go to Jotti's malware scan

Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan" box on the top of the page:

C:\Documents and Settings\User\w.exe

Click on the submit button. Please post the results in your next reply.

From the jotti website, after pasting the file path, the result as follows:-

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

Not sure what to make of that. Perhaps I had deleted that w.exe file which I suspected was a virus?

Possibly, that message mostly appears when the file isn't there to be uploaded. Your log looks OK now, how is it running?

So far so good. That constant modem activity seems to have stopped, so far. I think you have solved my problem. Thank you Daemon.

I have free versions of AVG Anti-virus and Zone Alarm running on my PC. Do you suggest I keep the AVG Anti- Spyware and/or the Super Anti-Spyware as well. Will all these software clash running at the same time? What program free or otherwise do you consider a must have for keeping out spyware and viruses?

Keep them both, they won't clash. Also, to help keep you clean follow the recommendations in Tony's article here:

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Do you need any further assistance or should I close the topic?
