I've got a Vundo infection which norton keeps finding with Auto Protect. Also i have an Adware file which keeps coming back. I have started to get the inevitable pop-ups. I have read through some of the current posts and someone else has a similar prob which I have tried to remedy but I can't download any of the tools, in fact I can't download anything. :whistling: My C:/ has very little in it apart from xp. I did this as a precaution after a previous infection so as to protect my files. I am asking for help as a last chance before I resort to a clean install of windows, hope you can help. Here is my HJT log.

Hi

You probably do have a vundo infection, as well as some others. Lets start with this since you are unable to download tools. It wont clear vundo but may allow you to download tools

You will need to print these directions out for use in safe mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\secure32.html
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{ACC26D84-0729-1033-0309-05091020002c}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\{ACC26D84-0729-1033-0309-05091020002c}\Update.exe" mc-110-12-0000272
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoSys] C:\WINDOWS\system32\autosys.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IpWins] C:\Program Files\Ipwindows\ipwins.exe

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Show hidden files and folders
  • Click start >>> control panel
  • click the tools tab and then click folder options
  • Click view
  • tick the show hidden files and folders radio button
  • Uncheck hide extensions for known file types
  • Uncheck hide protected operating system files
  • Click Apply then Ok
Delete the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\autosys.exe
c:\secure32.html

Delete these folders:
C:\Program Files\[b]Ipwindows

C:\Program Files\Common Files\[b]{ACC26D84-0729-1033-0309-05091020002c}

Vundo can prevent Hijackthis from showing some things, renaming it will solve this

Browse here D:\Installers\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe and rename HijackThis.exe to HJT.exe

Reboot

Please post a new Hijack log for me and we will continue :whistling:

Hi Loophole
Sorry it's taken so long to get back. I did as you said. But you were right.......there's more. Norton keeps turning up javaw.exe, offers to remove the threat but it keeps coming back with every reboot. I also found three files on my C:/ , [cfhbjd.exe] [kfidrvvl.exe] [xlxvkidl.exe] I've cut and pasted them to a floppy, simply 'cos I know they aren't meant to be there and they were created the same time as all this started. Tell me what you think. Anyway, here's the log.

Hi chippy :whistling:

No problem on the delay. Yes, we still have some work to do. Can you download any tools ? Is that log from Safe mode?

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DA39570-5FD2-4f18-94B4-20730CB3F727} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\bydkqnix.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {92D11D57-F010-47AF-B0A7-9C6D09BF8F47} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: Trixie.Bho - {B0744341-96E0-4341-9ED2-8BC36CE0CCD0} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Reboot

Post a new Hijack log and the answers to my questions please.

Thanks

Hi :whistling:

Mor than likely just randonly named malware files. We still have cleaning to do

Go to Start | Run and type this in the box: services.msc
  • Locate this service, ' COM+ Messages then right click and select properties.
  • Under Service Status: select Stop
  • In the drop down box labeled, Startup Type: select Disabled
We will delete it in a bit

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Okay, that's done. Just to keep you in the picture, "Auto Protect" has quarantined these; "Purityscan"; Webhancer; Look2Me; Delfin. I have the specific filenames if you need them.

Combofix log:

John - 07-01-02 9:30:19.78 Service Pack 2

Hi :whistling:

Almost done

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{ACC26D84-0729-1033-0309-05091020002c}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\{ACC26D84-0729-1033-0309-05091020002c}\Update.exe" mc-110-12-0000272
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Tri&xie Options... - {20CCCFEC-D26F-4ffe-996B-388B39C8CCCA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscoree.DLL

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

Run Killbox
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbphketx.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xuldnrpk.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qomnnmn.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

Yeah, everything seems a lot better now. I've stopped getting the security warnings from my anti-virus and the pop-ups appear to have stopped. Are we done?

I love the internet. I've just had a complete stranger, thousands of miles away, spend his valuable time to help sort out a problem on my pc. Way cool if you ask me. Thanks very, very much.

Hi

Yep we are done and you are very welcome for the help :help:

Congratulations :whistling:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

  • Updating your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:

Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
