I have a lot of space taken up on my computer but not that much on my machine. When I run spybot it finds a webrebates.toprebates file and deletes it but it keeps coming back. When I run a defrag it does nothing to fragmented files. check my hijack this log and let me know if I have a virus on my machine please.

Indy,

Why do you have nail fix on your computer? Did you have a file with that infection?

1. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\MyWay
c:\program files\VVSN
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\nailfix

2. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

c:\windows\system32\richedtr.dll
c:\windows\cfgmgr52.ini
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.2\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.3\UWFX5LP_0001_0715NetInstaller.exe

Run ATF again, reboot and let me know if there is a diffrence.

Thanks,

:whistling:

I had a virus about a year and a half ago. Nice Trojan species. I think that's when I put the nailfix on.
I removed the VVSN, Nailfix, and MyWay folders. they are still gone after restart.

The only one of the others that I had was cfgmgr52.ini. I left the folder but cleared out all 29 files that were in there. I didn't do this in safe mode, is that OK? I ran the analysis on defrag and all those fragmented files were still there. should I try something else? My computer isn't running slow, I'm just pretty sure there isn't 19 gig of stuff on board. I removed some programs that weren't being used and didn't gain anymore space. I figure it should still be able to defrag the files, not leave them alone. Here's another hijack log just in case there's something I'm missing.

AND, I still have a one of those web_rebates in my add/remove program menu but it says that it can't find the main source so it can't remove it. There were 2, I reomved 1 but not the bad one.

it's web_rebates when I went into safemode there were 2 of them. one let me remove it but the other said that it couldn't find the main source for it so I couldn't remove it.
It's WebRebates (by TopRebates.com)
says it can't find Main Class so program will shut down.

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the entry you wish to delete (the web rebates one)
  • Click on Delete this entry
  • Click "Yes"
Close HJT

I am begining to think that your problems may not be malware realated. I am going to have one of the GTG Techs take a look at this for you.

That fixed that webRebates problem. I'm running a defrag right now. I'll let you know what it ends like.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :whistling:

If you have unhidden you “hidden files and folders”, ensure you rehide them back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 2 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

ATF

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read So how did I get infected in the first place?
