LAPTOP WON'T START. BATTERY SEEMS COMPLETLY DEAD,but won't run off adapter with battery in or out of laptop.tried different adapter with same results.checked adapter with volt meter and it seems good.putting out 19 volts.it is a DELL LATITUDE D500. Don't know it a bad battery will keep it from running.get no lights at all. help.

It should run fine off an adapter without a battery in it, so you have bigger problems then a bad battery I am afraid.

Try this: unplug the laptop, remove the battery, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, plug it back in, leave the battery out and see if it boots up.

I do know that there are a couple of class action lawsuits filed against Dell, involving 5 different laptop models. They are talking about extending the warranty for those 5 models. You might want to do a search with google to see if yours is listed.

The D500 is on the list of laptops with POSSIBLE bad batteries.
Check the link. Dell Battery Recall.

However, as stated, it should run without the battery.

What is the age of the laptop?
Do you know if it is still under warranty?
You can go to the Dell website and follow the screens to check on the warranty.
