Hi,

I hope someone can help.

I have recently bought a new laptop - Toshiba A100, running Windows XP media centre edition. I connect using an Orange wi-fi Livebox and protect myself with AVG anti-virus free edition and Zone Alarms basic firewall. I run a daily virus check through AVG and anti-spyware through Ad-aware free edition (both of which I update daily).

My problem is: I am getting 'threat detected' virus alerts every 10-15 minutes I am online. I am healing these immediately, but when I do a virus scan I invariably have one or two Trojans in my temporary internet files... or worse places! These all seem to heal okay. Then, lo and behold, next day, I surf and have more viruses.

Is this normal? What am I doing wrong? This never happened on my old desktop, which I was far less vigilant with.

One other thing: I found some funny software through 'Add/Remove Software': Bar888 and CIN(?) I think. I googled these and found out they were malicious so removed them through add/remove software. There is no trace of them now that I can find.

Sorry no Hikackthis log - but can anyone give me any pointers?

Thanks,

Luke Chaput

LukeChaput,

We need at least a hijackthis log in order to help you; otherwise, we're operating blindly. Please read through this post and follow the directions for posting a log.

Thanks,

Hi!

Sorry about not providing a Hijackthis log.

Please find details below.

Can anyone let me know why my computer is attracting so much attention from viruses? Or is this normal?

LukeChaput,

I only see remnants of infection in your log now.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AEC48FA0-E7A1-42F0-AFEC-7D7B39722858} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O20 - Winlogon Notify: fcccddb - fcccddb.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winexy32 - winexy32.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Find and delete this file:

ALCMTR.EXE

Now, I'm not sure why you're getting those entries you're getting. You've got an updated anti-virus in place and a firewall, which is good. I'm going to give you some recommendations for some additional protection, which if implemented can help you stay safe.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future. I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thank you so much, Sari! I'll do that.

Computer's been running better since I ran all the programmes suggested by your initial post. But I'll do the final cleaning up just to make sure.

Great service you guys offer here - keep up the good work :whistling:

All the best,

Luke

Sari,

I've done a search for alcmtr.exe and I got 4 results:

Alcmtr.exe under C:\WINDOWS
ALCMTR.exe-235F9538.pf under C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
Alcmtr.exe under C:\Program Files\Realtek\InstallShield
Alcmtr.exe underC:\TOOLSCD\SoundDriver\WDM

Should I delete them all?

Cheers,

Luke
