Hey

so my computer has some sort of virus or hijacker or something. no matter how many times I run AVG opr spybot or Ad-Aware it keeps coming back. and when you log onto the internet it goes to www.viruszone.com instead of the homepage no matter how many times you reset the homepage. I tried to run the Panda Activescan. but something is blocking my computer from scanning my computer. I finally got hijackthis to work...but only in safemode because when I tried in normal mode it would close before I could do anything.
I even have to copy the loffiel sooo fast becasue whatever it is closed the notepad file in like 3 seconds....

Can anyone help?!?! what do I do?!

Hello Pam and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

You have quite a mixture of malware. Let’s see what we can do.

Firstly could you please disable Windows Defender from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Windows Defender, click Tools, click Options, under Real-time protection options, clear the Use real-time protection check box, click Save

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later.
Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop. We are being forced to do this in two parts since your HOSTS file is stopping you from visiting AV sites; we must deal with that first.

Hoster

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Reboot normally and continue with the rest of the fix by downloading these:

CCleaner
AVG AntiSpyware combofix.exe

Please install, and update AVG Anti Spyware
  • Load AVGas and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Please select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Deselect "Only if threats were found"
  • Close AVGas. Do not run it yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode
  • In Safe Mode, load AVGas and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be patient.
  • AVGas will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVGas will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (I suggest the Desktop).
  • Please ensure you post that log in your reply.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into normal mode.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the Windows tab, and under the heading of Applications, Utilities uncheck AVGas Anti-Spyware then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look. (3 logs in total please).

hello thank you so much for your help!

The computer is a family PC with different logins for different people...the virus only seems to be affecting my side of the computer. I believe that I have administrator rights... but Im not totally positive. Is there something different that needs to be done in this case?

No, please continue with the fix in two parts. You must fix the HOSTS file first.

Yes, Restore Microsoft Hosts. Looks as though the programme has had a facelift and has changed some wording.

I will change my fix for HOSTS, thanks for highlighting it.

The weird thing is that I will be recommending that you alter the HOSTS file at the end of the fix to the MVPS one, but for now continue with the Microsoft HOSTS list.

Effectively, the malware is preventing you from visiting all of the sites listed above. That's why we have to alter them before we can move on.

Fun isn't it?

Alright, so here is the deal. I did everything you said. But when I did hijackthis in safe mode, a couple of the things I was suppose to fix werent even there.

But I went ahead. Everything else went fine, until running hijackthis in normal mode. I still cant do it. It closes itself down before I even start to scan my computer. so What Ive posted here is a hijackthis log from SAFEMODE after I did everything else.

Hello again Pam

I'm sure you will have noticed that the 01 entries in HJT have multiplied somewhat, but I can't see (definitely) their source in your log. The source may either have already been deleted or it may be in another account's log. I can only see two accounts, Pam and Don so far.

I suggest that we try to restore the HOSTS file again, and we can do it both with Hoster and HJT. Then I think it would be prudent of me to check the HJT logs for the other accounts. Please name or number them to save any confusion (Don't you just love family PC's?).

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Microsoft Hosts button and press OK.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpfvgpvyx\

Reboot normally

Logon to each account in turn and create a fresh HJT. Please post all 3 together and I'll check them over.

Yes, by all means please do so.

The only difference between safe and normal mode is that start ups do not load in safe mode.

Hello again

I think we are winning this battle.

Please logon as yourself.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpfvgpvyx\winlogon.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpfvgpvyx\winlogon.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate and delete this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpfvgpvyx\

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Now change user and logon as Don:

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;*.canfor.ca;*.northwood.ca; canfor.hroffice.com
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log, from normal mode for both accounts, and I will take another look.
