I wanted to ask you if after we get this all cleaned up, can I remove some of the programs like combofix, etc.. If not, that's fine.

Hi again Mary Ann :whistling:

I wanted to ask you if after we get this all cleaned up, can I remove some of the programs like combofix, etc.. If not, that's fine.

Absolutely! When we are all done, I will give you a list of the tools we use, and my recommendations for what to do with each one. Ultimately it is your choice if you want to keep them or not though. A few of them will be of no use to you at all, so we will make sure that we get rid of the cluster this has caused.

Before we may continue, I need to see another HijackThis log for analysis.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log along with a Startup List and I will get back to you A.S.A.P.!

To Get StartupList:
  • Please download StartupList to your desktop.
  • Double click the startuplist.zip to extract the files inside.
  • When the new window opens, please double click on StartupList.exe
  • A window will open that will begin listing all of the startups with icons and text. In the lower left hand corner, it will show the status. When it says "ready" in the bottom left corner, it has finished running.
  • At the top of the window, click File>Save As and save startuplist.txt to your desktop.
  • Close startuplist.exe window
  • Post a copy of startuplist.txt in your next reply
Thanks!

It appears the Boards are having some trouble (this has been happening recently)

Could you please ask any questions and show the hijackthis log in your post, and then add the startup list as an attachment. That may or may not make it work. :whistling:

Thanks!

Hi Mary Ann,

Try adding it as an attachment:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Scroll down to the File Attachments section
  • Click Browse...
  • Navigate to the attachment and click open
  • Post the reply
For some reason or another, I have found that sometimes when posts are too big they will come up as blank. We are currently looking into this and will hopefully have it fixed soon! :whistling:

Hi Mary Ann,

Thanks for doing that! I just wanted to let you know that I will not forget about you, but I may not be able to get back to you until tomorrow due to the size of the startup list. Whenever I get through it I will get back to you! :whistling:

Hi again Mary Ann,

Sorry again for the delay.

We are going to try using killbox to get rid of that line again only in a different way. :whistling:
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Replace on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Put a tick next to the Use Dummy option.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntos.exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntos.exe,

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis. Reboot.

Please post a new HijackThis log (after rebooting) and let's see if this caught it! If not, there are still plenty more options.

Hang in there!

Hi again Mary Ann,

You did just fine! The good news is that persistent piece of malware is gone now! We have a few more things to do though, but we are very close!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Just to make sure no other nasties are hiding, let's do an online scan. :help:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
Let me know how this goes! You have done an amazing job thus far! :whistling:
