Hello,

At times, my computer freezes and will not open programs. After using Windows Task Manager to End Task for explorer.exe, any programs I tried to open will begin to open.

This problem occurs at random times.

I've followed all instructions before posting this message. Thanks for your help.

Here are the hijackthis log and uninstall_list log.

Denise Mize,

Hi, and welcome to Geeks to Go. I'm sorry you're having problems, but let's see what we can do to help.

First off, you have 3 files that are not identifiable - either as malware or valid files. I'd like you to upload them for analysis.

Please go here to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • Browse for this filename: C:\WINDOWS\system32\sgvrfy32.exe
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
Repeat this for the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\XZ5050.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\errixpnp.dll

If you can't find the files, then copy and paste the file name in the box and click send.

1. Download ComboFix.exe using either of these links:

* bleepingcomputer.com

* techsupportforum.com

2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh HJT log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.
Please include the combofix log and the AVG Anti-spyware log in your reply.

Thanks,

Denise Mize,

Ok, we got the files successfully and they're being analyzed.

Please go to c:\windows\temp. Right click on the folder and select Send to compressed file. It will create a new folder called c:\windows\temp.zip. Right click on that folder and select properties. If it's under 1 MB in size, please go to http://uploadmalware.com and upload the folder.

We want to see if there are any other malicious files in that folder.

Now I want you to scan for rootkits.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop (choose "I ACCEPT" then click "DOWNLOAD" on the website).

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > "Scan" then > "Next".

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Please paste the log in your next reply, and then we'll be able to get this stuff cleaned up.

Thanks,

sari

Thank you, again, for your help!
I uploaded "temp.zip" to uploadmalware.com

Denise Mize,

Good - no rootkit found. Let's move ahead with clean up.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop. Don't do anything with it yet.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Go to Start > Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below services:

System Event Dispatcher

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, under the General tab click the Stop button, then click the drop-down box to change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Reboot into safe mode.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
O21 - SSODL: Vidapai - {82CA614F-D1A0-44EC-BF3A-4A987B2F36AF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\errixpnp.dll
O23 - Service: System Event Dispatcher - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sgvrfy32.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\errixpnp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sgvrfy32.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Doubleclick ATF Cleaner and run it again.

Go to Start > Run and type cmd. At the command prompt, type sc delete "System Event Dispatcher" and hit Enter.

Reboot into normal mode and post a new hijackthis log.

Thanks,

sari

Denise Mize,

That looks so much better - I imagine your pc is running better as well. Just to be on the safe side, I'd like you to run combofix one more time. Delete the one you currently have first.

1. Download ComboFix.exe using either of these links:

* bleepingcomputer.com

* techsupportforum.com

2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh HJT log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Please post the combofix log.

Thanks,

sari
