My home page seems to be hijacked. When I went on to Google which usually is my homepage, it was an advertisement for spyware removal, and every time I tried to remove it more pop ups would occur. I finally managed to get rid of it, but NOW I am locked into using MSN as my homepage. No other page will stay when I click the apply button in tools. Every time I connect, I go back to MSN. How can I get back to normal? Tried the restore option, but it didn't work. Please help if you can

Hi

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi

I dont see anything wrong.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post along with a new HijackThis log.

Yes :whistling:

Although I dont know how I missed it before

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
3. Run Smitfraud Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

4. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed as follows:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.

Reboot

Post a new Hijack log and the rapport.txt

Rapport report would not save to my regular desk top or files or folders. I am still stuck on MSN.com The computer will not change it. My PDF files won't load. I am very frustrated and am about to pull the plu : g and send it out to be fixed. Not angry with you, angry with the jerks who sit around and develop this crud that they send to computers. :whistling:

Hi cdalbon :whistling:

No need to pull the plug. I wasnt aware of the PDF problem. I did miss an infection I should have caught sooner, but it should be gone now.

Rapport report would not save to my regular desk top or files or folders.

You dont have to save it, just look for it here C:\rapport.txt, then open it and copy/paste it into this thread

You have no startpage set. Open Internet explorer, click on tools, then internet options, and change your start page to whatever you wish for instance....google.com. then click apply ,ok

Please run a scan with HijackThis and check the following lines for removal:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PopularScreensaversWallpaper] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\F3SCRCTR.DLL,LES
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebse...arch.jhtml?p=ZC
O21 - SSODL: carbinyl - {8d8c2387-7f80-4022-9be6-43630a969558} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwquvw.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL other open windows except for HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

click >>start>>control panel >>add/remove programs and uninstall the following if present:

My web search

Reboot

delete this folder

C:\Program files\ my web search

Post a new hijack log for me please :help:

Changing the startup page isn't the problem. I know how to do it. The problem is that everytime I do it, it always kicks it back to MSN. :whistling:

Hi :whistling:

Don't worry this just takes a few steps. We will get it. I need to see the next report please

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply with a hijack log

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

It keeps telling me not to rename it, and to rename it combofix.exe. I didn't name it or rename it. I just did what you said. Ain't this fun????
