I own a Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook computer with Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2. I also own an older Hewlett Packard Model 720 Officejet printer.

The older software that came pre-packaged with the printer will not work with this computer. I logged onto the Hewlett Packard website and downloaded the updated driver/software for this printer.

The software downloads without error. When I attempt to install this software on my computer, I get an error message which states that I must "reboot the computer" before installing this software.

After I reboot the computer, I get the same error about rebooting the computer. Needless to say, I cannot use this printer with my Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook.

I contacted HP through their website, and HP sent me an e-mail to assist with the installation of this printer. I followed the procedure without success.
This printer is one of the "all-in-one" printers, i.e., combined fax, printer, and scanner.

I really need to get this printer installed! Any help would be appreciated.

Below is a copy of the e-mail message I sent to Hewlett Packard:

Message sent to Hewlett Packard:

"After downloading the updated software from the HP website, i.e.,
http://hp.com, the installation screen appears to install the software. When
I click the install button on the dialog box, another screen appears and
states something to the effect that the computer "must be rebooted." I
reboot the computer and make an attempt at re-installing the software. I
receive the same message to reboot and the software will not install.

I read the Dell troubleshooting FAQ on the HP website. My computer is
configured for ECP and I uninstalled the ECP port, and reinstalled it following
the procedure as outlined in the FAQ. The software still would not install.

My computer (Dell Inspiron 8100) has an A15 BIOS. I have Windows XP
Profesional with Service Pack 2, including all applicable "hotfixes." After I
first acquired this notebook computer, I was able to successfully install and
utilize this printer. I had a system "crash" and I had to 'fdisk and reformat'
the hard drive. All software was again installed. When I attempted to re-
install the HP software, I received the error message as outlined above."

Thanks!

USB printer or parallel printer cable (how wonderful that HP makes such info tough to find).

You said the old printer software will not work....is that because it lacks a windows xp driver?

To start, let's get a clean slate...

Click Start, click All Programs, point to HP Officejet, and then click Uninstall Software.
