Welcome to Geeks to Go, dr_deathspike.

About the smallest drive you can buy readily is well over 80 gigs nowadays. Think more in terms of a 250 gig drive. I no longer install less than 1 gig of memory on any computer i use. The prices are so cheap ( $100) why bother with less. A good basic graphics card is the 6600 or 6800 Nvidia card. It will do most everything you want. A ATI 1900 card is comparable to the 6800 nvidia. For sound you cant go wrong with a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy card. I like Gigabyte, Abit, DFI, and Intel motherboards. Get the Intel Core 2 Duo CPU if possible(slightly expensive right now). And insist on a good power supply like a enermax or silverstone.

Is the $700 just for the system itself or do you also need to get a monitor, keyboard, etc. and still remain in the $700 range?

Here are some reference points for you (obviously it's a slow day at work). The total on this hardware is $735 before any mail-in rebates. I went with SLI cabable mobo and PSU so that 6 months from now, you can just stick in another 7600GT if you need a performance boost. There are many ways you can cut costs, but this should give you a good start. Go to Newegg.com and put together a wishlist, post it here, and we'll give you suggestions. Keep in mind that this does not include the OS, which will be another $100 or so.
