hey, i just saw that on today apple released the apple tv(itv) it looks great but i see 1 issue that i have , on the website it says only compatible with wide screen tv" Apple TV works with widescreen, enhanced-definition or high-definition TVs capable of 1080i, 720p, 576p, or 480p resolutions, including popular models from these manufacturers"

i have a sony non widescreen it is about 3-4 years old it is actually this one -(Sony KD32FS170 32" Trinitron)
i have been waiting for this itv for a long time

am i out of luck?

No, the tv will just display the video in letter box, if you want appletv buy it.

Sorry, the first reply was wrong. You must have an ED or HD tv for the appletv to work!!! Sorry for the mis info.

Your Sony KD32FS170 definitely will not work with Apple TV. The component input on it only accepts a 480i signal. Apple TV doesn't have an option to output 480i. I checked on the Sony Style tech specs. While the TV can do the 16 x 9 display, the important part is what type of signal it can accept.

Haha apple sure suprised us... they added a 480i option to the appletv and didn't tell anyone tell it was released. It should work fine on your tv, sorry for the mis info above, I only knew what apple had told us so far.

Apple doesn't publish it but it definitely does do 480i over component. Although if you don't have a 16:9 squeeze function on your TV, then the picture will be tall and skinny.
