Computer freezing - XP Home

Hi,

For the last couple of months, the computer is freezing up suddenly. Before that we get a warning that the definition files of symantac antivirus are out of date. If we restart everything seems normal including the antivirus definition files. This does not happen everytime, but happens very often. The O.S. is Windows XP Home.

I posted in malware section, but after doing several scans it looks like it is not a malware problem

This system has 512 MB RAM and 120GB Hard drive
