Formatting trouble

The formatting on my computer is messed up. When I am using bullet points in Microsoft Word and hit the tab button, the bullet point doesn't move to the right and change the type of bullet., only the cursor moves five spaces. Also, when I hit shift+tab, the cursor doesn't move back one tab, instead it continues to move to the right.
