Ok I have mcafee an i ran it, came back clean. My hubby was downloading some software for our vid camera and after that we started having problems
So i'm getting this pop up that says

system alert: malware threats
Your computer is infected with a back door trojan that allows the remote attacker to perform various malicious actions.click this baloon to download malware removal software.

I know balloon is spelled wrong, but thats the way they have it.

Please tell me what steps I need to take. Thanks in advance

Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.

• Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
• When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
• Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.

Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. If, after posting, the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.

Ok did up to the part where I click scan and then it looks like nothing is happening , says on the bottom scanning run keys, but nothing else is happening, been like that for an hour. How long does it take?

Hi sandstone. It should not take that long. It might be that the run key is corrupt or it could be that the infection is preventing a registry scan. Let's try the scan from Safe Mode.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:

• Restart the computer.
• As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
• Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
• Press the Enter key.

Now try and run the scan again.

Hi sandstone. Ok, let's try a different scanner.

Download HijackThis_sfx.exe
and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on the file you just downloaded and click on the UnZip button to install the program. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ folder by default.

Boot normally, start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it. Then press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.

I will review your log when it comes in.

Hi sandstone. Looks like AntiVermins. Please do the following:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

First, download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Post the SmitfraudFix report along with a new HijackThis log back here and I will review the information when it comes in.

Important
First, your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned. If it is run from the desktop then the backup files and folders can clutter up the desktop and be accidentally deleted.

• Please open My Computer
• Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
• Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
• Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Next, start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:
O21 - SSODL: carbinyl - {8d8c2387-7f80-4022-9be6-43630a969558} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwquvw.dll (file missing)
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

I would also recommend uninstalling LimeWire. Downloading anything from p2p programs is dangerous. You do not know where the files are coming from or what hidden payloads they contain (like the infection we just removed).

Now, reboot the machine and run a new HijackThis scan. Post the log file back here and let me know if any of the previous symptoms are still occuring.

Hi sandstone. We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

• Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
• Restart your computer.
  
• Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
• SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
• IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You already have a good firewall and a good antivirus application installed and running. It is important to have both to protect your system, and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:

• AdAware SE Personal
• Spybot Search & Destroy
