Im running a Amd 2500+, maxtor 120g hardrive, asus a7n8x, 2 256 pny ram, radeon 9500 pro, and xp. Just recently i have has problems where randomly out of nowhere i will here the hardrive busy sound go hay wire. For example, Ill be looking at a web page, or scaning my disk, and all of a sudden it just start clicking liek crazy. Why this is going on, i think i hear my mobo trying to shut it down, but its a real hard clicking kind of like when the computer restarts. Sometimes the computer recovers and continues on again, or it just shut down and restarts. I have reformatted the hardrive thinking it was a virus but i still have the same problem. If any one has ne clue please help! THanks!

Pull the cover off the box. Next time it happens, look at any fans that might installed. Use a rolled up piece of paper to isolate the sound coming from a particular device.

If the HD is making the clicking sound... replace it pronto... I had one occasion where a fan did go up, replaced the hd... only to discover it was a fan... Another where the power supply cable had gone bad...

isolate it first!
