laptop wireless button

I'm trying to help a friend overseas get his Compaq 2100 Presario laptop to recognize his wireless router. The button on the right front corner of this laptop doesn't appear to be working. When he pushes it in or out the light indicating that it is on does not come on. What is the work around for this button?
This was my old computer and it did work previously..I never had to try to activate the wireless with that button off.
