Trouble with sound coming from the net

I'm having problems with my sound. I can't seem to hear anything that I want to off the net although my speakers are working perfectly and I can listen to my music which are in media palyer or itunes and also on msn I can here the warning bells that go off when someone has messaged me otherwise I cannot listen to anything else for example trailers etc. I would be very greatful for any help!
