Out of nowhere I started getting one specific popup (always from the same folks) I checked my programs and I noticed something called Bar888, which I had never seen before. I'm not sure if it's related to the popups, though. In any event, below is my HJT log.

Thanks in advance

First of all could you click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and uninstall ewido - it's been replaced by AVG AntiSpyware.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.
Post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan. Then do this - download SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free version)
  • Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
  • It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
  • Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
    • Close browsers before scanning
    • Scan for tracking cookies
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Please leave the others unchecked.
    • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
  • On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
  • On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
  • Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
  • It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
  • To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
    • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
    • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
    • Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
  • Click close and close again to exit the program.
  • Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.

Hmm.. you've got an infection that has been modifying legitimate files. Is your Norton upto date?

Do a couple more scans for me - click here to run ActiveScan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Paste the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply.

Also, click here to download FindAWF.exe and save it to your desktop.

http://noahdfear.gee...com/FindAWF.exe

* Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
* It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
* Press any key and the FindAWF tool will begin scanning your computer for the infected AWF files and the backups the trojan created.
* It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
* When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt which will automatically be saved to your desktop or whatever location you ran the file from.
* Come back here to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

:whistling: that sounds bad!! Until I started getting popups today the computer was running smoothly.

And, no, my Northon's isn't up to date. I was using SpySweeper till something happened last week to that program and it wouldn't open.

I'm running Panda now. I'll post the results tomorrow morning. Thanks for your help!

OK, Norton and Spysweeper are not the same animal. If you have let your Norton licence expire then it is worthless. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and uninstall it. Download, install and run AVG antivirus:

http://www.grisoft.c...ng/us/tpl/tpl01

Have it remove all it finds. Reboot once again, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here.

I'll have a look at this other log generated.

OK, I uninstalled Norton's. I DLed and installed AVG anti virus and it found one trojan. I wasn't given any options as to what to do with the found trojan, ie, quarantine or delete so I'm not sure anything was done with it. Here is what it found
Object name; lupdate.exe
Path C:\ Documents and Settings\Smadar Meer\Local Settings\Temp\
Discovery: Trojan horse Donwloader Generic3.CVH
Status: Infected

Also, I noticed a new addition to my desktop. It's a yellow triangle icon with an exclamation point in the center. It's called "Click to Find and Fix Errors" When I checked its properties it shows that it was created yesterday at the same time I posted here, so I'm sure it has something to do with the pop-ups I began getting just then. Additionally, properties shows the following URL http://adserver.soft...y...0s45us: rg1

I also noticed that Bar888 is still in my program files. Can I just uninstall it?

Thanks for the help

Could you do this for me. Click here to download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri). Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.

Please do not run any other options until you are asked to do so.

Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad. Copy and paste that list here.

I DLed Smitfraud and clicked on the SmitfraudFix.cmd and I get the following message
"Process.exe file is missing", but I can see process.exe. I tried to download it twice and I get the same message.

I am leaving Wednesday on vacation for ten days and I see that we are on two different time zones.(I am in the US EST) I would really like to resolve this before I leave. Is there any way that I can get a response to my posts during the hours that I'm awake? LOL. Sorry if that sounds rude but as I said, I am very short on time

Thanks for the help!

OK. Could you click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Outerinfo

Try this instead of smitfraudfix - click here to download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop. Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next reboot into Safe Mode. You can get there by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your arrow to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive (where your operating system is installed). You will need that log later.

Next click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web and uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Normal Mode and rescan with HijackThis.

Paste the contents of the new HijackThis Log and the contents of smitfiles.txt in your next reply.
