My Log is below. My problem is as follows:

I am running Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A. I was using IE 5 6.0.2800.1106 until just recently. My problem was the computer would lock up while exploring the internet. This mainly happened when I would try to type information either in Yahoo mail or on a message board that I frequent (BWI.rivals.com) to discuss football.

In both cases, the computer locked up most frequently when I would enter a subject in the subject window and then would “tab” into the main body of my message. After typing just a few characters, the computer would lock up. Occasionally in Yahoo Mail, it would also lock up when I was accessing my address book. Sometimes it just locked up when switching web pages.

About one week ago I performed the steps listed in “Malware Removal – hijack this logs go here- you must read this before posting a haijack this log.”

I performed the following steps:

Ad-Aware SE (set up and configured per your instructions)
CWS Shredder
Spybot S&D
TDS –3 Antivirus
Windows Update

I also installed Firefox. I had excellent performance for about two days and then the problem started to occur all over again. I performed all of the steps again and it seems to give some improved performance for a while but, eventually the computer locks up again.

It now is happening more frequently just by going from one web page to another. I would really appreciate any help that you can provide.

Thanks,

Ziggy

Thanks for the reply jfcap. My computer has been performing the same as described in my original post even though I have repeated the steps 2-3 times since posting. I just repeated them again (nothing much was removed) and here is a fresh log. I appreciate your assistance and look forward to your reply.

Ziggy,

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions for easy reference

Go here and run at least two of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.yahoo.com.../hp/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.yahoo.com.../hp/search.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {578FC4E3-151E-456c-AF8E-B63061EFE228}} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Next please post a fresh HiJackThis log for me to look at.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Good Evening Justin,

Below is my fresh log. I ran TrendMicro HouseCall and it found nothing. Please note that you cannot use firefox to run that scan (you get error messages) This point was clearly spelled out but I missed it the first try.

I then ran Panda ActiveScan and it found nothing. I tried to run eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner but it was quite cumbersome and I went on to CWShredder.

I followed your steps on CWShredder (V2.14) and it said that CoolWebSearch was not found. I then fixed the five items using Hijack This. CWShredder did not find CoolWebSearch after booting up in safe mode as well. Now here is my log.

Thanks again for your help.

Ziggy,

Your logs looks like it is in good shape.

Do you still notice any problems?

And I do apologize for not telling you to use IE when runing those virus scans.

Justin,

No problems thus far but I have avoided areas where I have been experiencing them. Let me use the machine a little more "normally" and I will give you some feedback as soon as I have a problem or by the weekend if all is well.

Thanks for staying on top of this once we got started.

Justin,

This morning I experienced the same problem that I always have. I booted up and checked a few news websites. I then exited Firefox and logged into my network at work using our Virtual Private Network (VPN). After checking my e-mails, I logged off of the VPN and went to check a message board.

While the message board was loading, it locked up. The cursor had the hourglass displayed but the mouse would not work and nothing happened for several minutes (this is exactly the same way it always locks up). I just turned it off and drove to work.

I am curious if my logging into the VPN for work has anything to do with it. Sometimes the computer seems to lock up more frequently after I check my e-mails at work. Then other times, I use it all weekend without logging onto the VPN and then it locks up after working fine for the whole weekend. That is all that I can tell you and I look forward to your reply.

Thank you,

Zig

Ziggy,

When I get home, I will look at your log again and see if I can find anything that will make your system lock up.

Ziggy,

Please move HiJackThis (Currently on your desktop) and create a folder for it, and place HiJackThis into the folder. When HiJackThis is running from the desktop, there is a risk of files being reinfected.

Next, open up Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel Folder, and look for AOLFIX.exe, and remove it.

You do not need to remove this file, but it only needs to run once to make your computer work with AOL.

Also, Are you still seeing the same problems?

Hey Justin!!

Thanks for your reply. I misunderstood the instructions and created a folder named "hjt" for my logs but did not run the actual application from there. Sorry about that!! It is now moved.

I could not find AOLFIX in my control panel folder but it is in my startup tab in my msconfig folder. I hope that is what you meant. I look forward to your clarification on this point.

You may be onto something about the AOLFIX.exe file. When I first bought this computer, AOL and our old programs for connecting to my office (AT&T dial up) had some sort of conflict. I had to get rid of AOL. I hated their possessive software!! That was some time ago but the system would never shut down when I connected to work using AT&T dial up and then later surfed the web using AOL without re-booting in between.

I deleted this file some time ago but I "re-instated"it per the instructions given on this site. I have now removed it again. I hope you can follow my history lesson.

I have not had a problem today at all and I worked out of my home office and connected to the office via the VPN and also surfed the web some. I did not really "work it over" but, so far, there have been no problems.

I am traveling this weekend but will let you know if I experience any other problems.

Thanks again,

Ziggy

Ziggy,

This is the description of AOLFIX.exe that I have

AOLFIX.exe runs on Gateway Astra computers, and maybe a few others. Designed to repair a bad registry key in Gateway computers that would not allow AOL  to run correctly. Not seen much any more and should only run once

This is an optional fix, you do not have to remove this entry, but it will free up system resources.

Its not harmful, but if you do not want it to hog system resources, open up HiJackThis and rescan your computer. Place a check mark next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [AolFix] C:\windows\system\AolFix.exe

Then check Fix Checked

Close HiJackThis and reboot your computer.

That wont delete it from your compter, but it will prevent it from starting up when your system boots up.

Play around with your computer and see if you are still experiancing these problems.

Justin,

I tried to remove the entry suggested but it is no longer there. Just for insurance, I am posting a fresh log. So far no problems.

OK Justin - I surfed for about 30 minutes and did all of the normal things that normally cause it to lock up. It did not lock up! I then logged onto the network at work, checked e-mails, sent one e-mail and logged back out. I got back on to the internet, checked another message board and then came to this message board to see if you had replied to my latest post. My computer locked up while the geeks to go page was loading.

I have now re-booted and I have an idea. I am going to post a fresh log right now then log off the internet and log onto my work network. I will then run another log and post it so you can compare the log from a fresh boot to a log after I connect to the network at work.

Here is the log from a fresh boot:
