Hello Phil.
Have just gone through the instructions you provided earlier

1, run LSPfix - removed mswsck32.dll
2. run Hijack this - Fix Checked the file 04-hklm\..\run:[mstds.exe]c:\windows\system32\mstds.exe
-- hijackthis log saved
3. run Avenger, execute the script:
"Files to delete:
c:/windows/mzz.exe
c:/windows/system32.exe"
4. run Hijack this -- hijack2 log saved
5. after Avenger did its stuff and rebooted, during the reboot, Kaspersky alerted me with a Defense Alert, Riskware: Trojan-Generic, file: c:/windows/mzz.exe --- with the options to Quarantine/Terminate/Allow.
I chose Terminate
Then, Kaspersky came up with another window with the options: Rollback or Skip (and the text suggested to Rollback) -- but I chose Skip.
?????

I am attaching the logs: 1. highjackthis 2. avenger 3. highjack2

OK, I think I might be able to shed some light on this.

Please ensure that AVGas guard is disabled and then try Avenger again.

When it reboots, if either file is still present, choose QUARANTINE for the action to take by KAV

I am still a little concerned that Yahoo AV is still active.

After doing that, and leaving nothing to chance, right click on a spare bit of the botton taskbar and choose TASKMANAGER > processes > find mstds, exe click it to highlight it, click ENED PROCESS> close TASKMANAGER.

Now navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstds.exe and delete the file.

Let me know how you get on. I will be taking a break now for a few fours.

Hello again. This whole thing is driving me crazy.

-- here is where I am at:
1. have uninstalled AVGas
2. run Avenger,
Files to delete script:
c:/windows/mzz.exe
c:/windows/system32.mstds.exe
3. after the reboot, Kaspersky notifes of danger threat
--- file c:/windows/system32/mstds.exe
-- I Quarantine the file via Kaspersky
4. then I check processes running via TaskManager
-- mstds.exe is not on the list

5. in c:/windows/system32 -- I find the file mstds.exe, but DID NOT delete it ---- becuase am not sure if that is the right solution and what that file actually does .

Let me know what you think.

I can't quite understand why you would not wish to delete a Trojan.

There was no need for you to uninstall AVGas, just stop it from protecting your registry in real time. Often these antimalware programmes will just reverse a change made in attempt to protect your PC from change.

I can only advise you, but if you feel that I am off my head and don't know what I am doing, then that is your prerogative.

OK, two things, one make sure that you have Admin status by going into the Control Panel > User Accounts.

Secondly, you may have to delete the file in safe mode unless you use Task Manager to end the process.

The error you got from Avenger was 0xc0000034 which means Object Name Not Found.

I have not seen any sign of a root kit infection, but I suppose it is possible.

Please download: AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta and save it to your desktop.

Double click the file to install it. Accept the licence and follow the prompts to install and reboot. After rebooting, you should see the icon for AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta on your desktop. Double click it to open the programme. You will see a window with 4 buttons at the bottom of it. Click Search For Rootkits and the programme will start a scan, you will see the progress bar moving from left to right. When the scan is complete, a small window will open alerting you to the result. If anything was found, click Save Result To File and post that in your reply.

If nothing was found, please click the Perform in-depth Search saving anything found to file as before.

OK - I ran the AVG anti root and it found 1 item --
c:/windows/system32/mstds.exe --- rootkit type=Hidden application.

I didn't do anything else -- AVG anti root had the option of deleting it, but I wasn't sure if that was the right thing to do.

Let me know.

So should I delete the file via AVG root kit or do something else.
Will deleting the file this way in any way risk other elements of my computer.

Yes, please delete the file via AVG RK, this will in no way whatsoever do anything other than remove a Trojan RK from your system.

I am just kicking myself for missing that earlier, there is often a *.sys file to go with it, and I didn't see one.

I am hoping that your next reboot is good, please let me know so I can give you final instructions.

BTW, thank you for your generosity.

OK - I deleted the c:/windows/system32/msdts.exe file via the AVG anti root

-- when I reboot, no warning from Kaspersky

-- I checked the c:/windows/system32 folder and the file mstds.exe is still there
--- I tried to delete manually and get the message "access denied"

Is this normal.

No that is not normal.

Is it visible in Task Manager? If so, end process and try again to delete it.

Let's try Avenger again.

Copy ALL THE TEXT contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
c:\windows\system32\mstds.exe
c:\windows\mzz.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Now, start The Avenger programme by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • Upon reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy & paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log from normal mode, by using Add Reply

Hello Phil ... the case of the evasive mstds.exe file continues. This is truly driving me crazy.
--------
Here is what I have done:
1. checked TaskMgr - mstds.exe process not visible there.
2. run Avenger with your script to delete mss.exe and mstds.exe --- avenger.txt attached below.
3. computer reboots and Kaspersky warns of risk with c:/../system32/mstds.exe
--- I Quarantine the file.
4. file mstds.exe no longer appears in the c:/windows/system32 directory
5. run hijack this --- hijackthis log attached.
