Hello again.

I want you to have a look at the following:

3. computer reboots and Kaspersky warns of risk with c:/../system32/mstds.exe
--- I Quarantine the file.
4. file mstds.exe no longer appears in the c:/windows/system32 directory

Now this:

File c:\windows\system32\mstds.exe deleted successfully.
File c:\windows\mzz.exe deleted successfully.

The difference is this / as opposed to this \

I am guilty of being lazy and copying your text, I can't believe that I didn't notice until the last fix.

Anyway, Avenger says the file is was deleted, which is what I would expect, but we know the file is back and look at what else is back:

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\mswsck32.dll

So, logically, we know that all three names are aliases of the same Trojan, and we can safely assume that each revives the other, therefore the answer is that all must be deleted at the same time.

With that in mind, we have to adjust the registry, which we can do via LSP fix and HJT, then we use Avenger for ALL THREE, and providing that there are no other accounts on this PC, then the infection ends.

Before we get underway, please check that instances of any of the three files does not exist in any other location on your PC. If they do, please feel free to delete them from wherever they are since they are "scum" files, they do nothing that is not malicious.

*************************************************************

Run LSPfix and place a checkmark or tick against the I know what I am doing checkbox.

Highlight every instance of the following names and move them from the Keep to the Remove panel. Be sure to move nothing other than the files listed below!

mswsck32.dll

When done, click on Finish to exit the programme; do not use the X in the top right-hand corner as nothing will happen!

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mstds.exe] c:\windows\system32\mstds.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Uninstall.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Copy ALL THE TEXT contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
c:\windows\system32\mstds.ex.
c:\windows\mzz.exe
c:\windows\system32\mswsck32.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Now, start The Avenger programme by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • Upon reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy & paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log from normal mode, by using Add Reply

Fingers crossed here.

Can't fault your log. Please give it 24 hours to be sure. Please let me know if all is OK now. It should be. I can't believe I made that error and just did not notice it. Perhaps time to pack it in. I'm getting too old.
