When my daughter tries to start her laptop she gets the following message:

STOP: C0000218 (Registry File Failure)
The registry cannot load the hive (file)
\System Root\System32\Config\Software
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not usable
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk: nn

Once the dump had completed, we tried rebooting using the last known good configuration but the above message reappeared.

What has happened and how can we sort it out?

Thank you for any assistance.

I have found the following web site that gives instructions on what to do:

http://support.micro....com/kb/307545/

However, when I start trying to copy the files, I get the message "The file could not be copied"

Where do I go from here?
