swamped by ad-aware pop ups

I have unsuccessfully tried to remove a malicious ad-aware from my system that repeatedly opens pop ups even when no explorer is opened... I have followed your guidelines under "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" to no avail. I have run Spybot, Ad-aware SE personal and spywareblaster but can't shake this program off... I (think) it is Elite.

I hope you can help me because I am now at a loss.

Please follow this link to a perfect advice by Calamity Jane. Follow her advice by the letter, including the added text on Microsoft Antispyware (dated 25 March 2005).

Print out the entire text and follow her lead.

At the end, post back here with a fresh log using HijackThis.

Will do and thanks for the reply.

I think I tracked down the source of my problems to:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitexxb32.exe
which I deleted in safe mode and everything SEEMS stable now but I will keep this link handy if I wasn't successful.

Only doing that seems to be enough. Still, I´d advice you to do this (leave my previous advice).

Download EliteToolbar removal.
Unzip the files to a convenient folder.
Reboot your machine in Safe Mode (just click onto F8 key the same moment the pc is starting, before the MS Windows flag screen) and run the EliteToolbar Remover, then click the "Kill Elite Toolbar" button and wait until it will finish its work.

You can post back here with a fresh HijackThis log to check.
