so I've done as much cleaning as I'm able to do; the only symptom the infection is giving me is closing all web browsers (IE and my default, Opera) about a minute after the programs are opened. :whistling: So that's a new one to me. uTorrent, MSN, Skype... nothing else seems to be affected.

System specs: WinXP SP2, Asus motherboard, AthelonXP 1700+, 1 gig ram, two hard drives (Master is partitioned, Slave isn't.)

AVG hasn't found anything in the last two scans (first two scans cropped up 3 malware and 1 tracking cookie) and Adaware has been coming up clean aside from lists of recently used files.

(Incidentally, I've noted that there's files relating to Ipod services in the registry. I don't own an Ipod, never have. there's also some notations of 'files missing' on the logfile, I suspect these happened when cleaning out the C drive. That partition's a little on the small side, so I try to keep it clean.)

Thanks for any help you can give.

an interesting discovery; the browser windows only shut down when I'm attempting to open web-based e-mail. so I'll ammend the above symptoms: It doesn't close after 1 minute, it closes a handfull of seconds after web-based e-mail in-boxes open. It's also been closing before the web-based virus scanners can be run.

hope the increased information helps.

[edit] Opera closes if I try to open too many tabs, (eg: clicking down the bookmarks list to read webcomics, didn't have that problem before) and both IE and Opera close _after_ logging in to any site requiring a log in. (Geekstogo has me auto-logged in, so I havn't had a problem with this site.) Not sure why the online scanners have resulted in the programs closing. [/edit]

Hi and welcome :whistling:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dlg\ctfmon.exe

Can you scan the above file at one of these sites please:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.virustotal.com/

let me know results. You can copy/paste results back here.
I don't like where it is running from. Usually runs from system32.

If you have trouble to get to sites please zip up a copy of that file and upload it here:
Best to zip it and password protect the file so no chance of accidential execution if you are using another computer to upload the file. Preferr if you use "infected" without quotes for password.

http://www.uploadmalware.com

In username section put your name from here
In "URL where requested" section put link to this thread.

Click "browse" beside #1> navigate to zipped file> hilight it> click "open"

Put in comments section I asked for the file and include password for the file.

Finally click "submit" to upload.
let me know when you have done this.

Regarding iPod service.
It most likely was installed along side Quick Time. It comes bundled with iTunes software.

It has been a few days since you posted log.
Please do the following:

Run new scan with hijackthis> post the new log.
Keep Hijackthis open.

Click "open misc tools section"
Click "open uninstall manager"
Click "save list.."
Save list> post log.

1. Download this file and save it to c:\ :

http://download.blee...Bs/combofix.exe
http://www.techsuppo...ls/combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
You will temporarily lose desktop while scan is running. Once scan is done desktop will return to normal.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

**note

Please avoid running your p2p programs till we can determine if clean. You might be spreading the infections to other p2p users.

Despite the fact that these scans came up clean, I noticed that there were two ctfmon.exe files in the registry; one where you said it should be,
(O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe)
the other in the extra folder.
(O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ctfmon] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dlg\ctfmon.exe)
should I attempt to zip & pw protect both, and upload them to the uploadmalware.com site?

new HJT log, uninstall list, and combofix log follow.

did I miss anything? I'll be unable to use my computer between thursday and saturday because I'm away from home on business, and geekstogo is shutting down the browser windows as well, so I'm limited on checking things between trips to work and home. Just FYI. (and edited to fix a mised formatting tag) :whistling:

Thanks again for the help, Blender.

Hi

Despite the fact that these scans came up clean, I noticed that there were two ctfmon.exe files in the registry; one where you said it should be,
(O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe)
the other in the extra folder.
(O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ctfmon] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dlg\ctfmon.exe)
should I attempt to zip & pw protect both, and upload them to the uploadmalware.com site?

Yes please do.
Please include the password to these files in your comments and which file is which. Include link to this thread as well.

Thanks!

---------------------------------

Start Hijackthis
Run system scan only and check the following items: (the updreg.exe is not malicious. Is just a register nag to register soundcard hardware)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9E9CB739-5044-6556-DCF8-9047384B2C1B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyzcnvig.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
O23 - Service: lfucvbhbobdi (laejricr6) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sznhsfqp6.exe (file missing)

Close All open windows except Hijackthis and click "fix checked".
Exit Hijackthis and reboot.

Please post:

New Hijackthis log
Complete startuplist log:
Open Hijackthis
"Open misc tools section"
Check the following 2 options:
"list also minor sections (full)"
"list empty sections (complete)"

Hit "generate startuplist log" and OK.

Post results.

Download blacklight beta from here:

http://www.f-secure....blacklight.html
Accept agreement which takes you to download page.
Download blbeta.exe to desktop.
Disconnect from internet
Shut down running apps by the clock.
Shut down any open browser windows and explorer windows.
Double click blbeta.exe
Wait for program to load. If you get any warnings about a driver loading and wants to run thru explorer; let it. It is blbeta.
click "scan"
Wait for scan to finish.
Please don't run anything else or open windows while scan is running.
Once it is done it will tell you if items are found. If so...click "next" then "close".
Do NOT use this tool to rename anything! Sometimes legit items are hidden by malware as well as legit apps.
Log file called fsbl +time+date.txt is created on desktop.

Please post contents of log.

Thanks :whistling:

Question:

This site shutting your browser down...
Do other security sites do the same thing?
Such as Antivirus sites?

I'd like to try an online scan if possible please: This one does not clean -- just reports.

Using Internet Explorer please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save report button.
  • Call it Kaspersky.txt
  • Expand the arrow beside "file types" and save as .txt file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

If log is large please attach it to your post. Make sure to save the log as .txt or forum software will revoke the htm attachment.

Thanks!

I'm in process of uploading the zipped files to uploadmalware.com. I noticed some things about the zipped files and what was around them, tried to include as much info as I could about it. Will edit this entry with a link to the file when it's up. Should be my username as the pw. [edit] couldn't get the file to upload. uploadmalware.com claimed it was too big, over 5 Megs... which is crap, 'cause the zipped file is 2,107K. I sent an e-mail to dave, but gmail wasn't gonna let me send a zipped .exe, either. what would you like me to do now?[/edit] [edit2]tried uploading the contents separately; notes.txt+dlg_ctfmon+sys32ctfmon, but the website gave me the same error message, but let me upload notes.txt[/edit2]

You had some questions...
Do other security sites shut down the browser window?
Some; specifically, the online scanners that this site reccomends before posting HJT logs gave me trouble. Might be 'cause I was opening them from shortcuts saved to my hard drive, but GeeksToGo.com was having trouble too... *shrug*

Such as Antivirus sites?
I honestly havn't tried sites like Norton. I tried running the scan you suggested, and the results are attached as kaspersky.txt Attached File  Kaspersky.txt   19.72KB   159 downloads

I remember killing the sznhsfqp6.exe file, but the others I removed are gone from this logfile, so killing 'em the first time stuck... not sure what that means.

Hi

Sorry for delay. I'm not normally away this long at a time.

That file dlg_ctfmon you have trouble uploading..
Can you try uploading to this site please?:

http://www.thespykil...x.php?board=1.0

You don't have to register.
Pretty much the same procedure there as uploadmalware.

You can use same username as here
In subject put "requested by Blender"
In body put the link to here.
Make sure to put the password in your comments there.

Press "browse", browse to location of your dlg_ctfmon.zip
Hit "submit" to upload file.

It is normal you don't see the file you just uploaded because only researchers can see them and download.

Let me know here when you hve posted there.

Couple other files I would like if they exist.

c:\windows\System32\drivers\xztbnqbr.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sznhsfqp6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vapicwmi.exe

You can upload both at the above site.

Next:

Click start> run> type: cmd.exe and hit enter.

Type the following commands and hit enter after each one:
If you get errors...continue anyway. Errors are likely because the file seems not to exist.

sc delete "xztbnqbr"
sc stop "laejricr6"
sc delete "laejricr6"

Exit cmd.exe

Open Hijackthis
Run system scan and check:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ctfmon] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dlg\ctfmon.exe

Close all open windows and click "fix checked".

Exit Hijackthis and reboot.

Find and delete these files if found:

Don't delete that funny ctfmon.exe file till we've had a look at it.
All we did with HJT was disable it from running at boot.
Easy enough to fix if it does belong to some program.

c:\windows\System32\drivers\xztbnqbr.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sznhsfqp6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vapicwmi.exe
D:\WINNT\system32\AST.exe
D:\WINNT\gsi.exe
D:\WINNT\unast.exe

Post fresh hijackthis log, new complete startuplist log and let me know how the system is running.

If we really have problems removing this junk...
Is your D drive bootable?
Looks like you have Windows 2000 installed on that drive.
Looks like there is some cleaning up to do on that OS as well.

Thanks :whistling:

no worries on being gone, I just got back from ice-climbing less than an hour ago. I'll try to get the new information for you ASAP, but unless I scam the use of a neighbor's laptop, (or my own computer decides to allow me to run web-browsers again...) I won't be able to post again until monday.

Theoretically, D:/ should be bootable. However, it's been acting as a backup drive for a couple years now, I may have gone in and tried deleting large items from the winnt folder to make space. I can try switching the master-slave pins, and switching which hard drive the machine boots from in the bios if you'd like. Not sure what'll work, though, 'cause of shortcuts being changed and the like. I dunno.

The dlg-ctfmon.exe file's been uploaded to the forum you directed me too. I attached the whole file-set inside the main zip, everything should be passworded as my username, same as before.

As I said, I won't be able to post again until monday, so I'll find and upload the other three files then monday morning. (I'm EST, so it'll be monday morning for you too.)

Cheers, and thanks again for the help.

Hi

Ice climbing! Sounds kewl! :whistling:

I got that file OK this time. It looks to be a renamed emule.exe. A p2p program.
Looks like all those files in dlg\temp\*.part are partial downloads from "emule".

Anyone else besides you use this computer? Mabye renamed emule so you wouldn't know about it?

nope, only me. IE seems to be letting me work on my home computer now, havn't done anything to it since before your last set of instructions. bizarre. and yeah, I noticed the icon on the bigger file as well, but didn't recognise it. I've never used emule. I might've used e-donkey or some such, but that woulda been 3-4 years ago, certainly not while using XP.

I'll get onto that last set of instructions, and post again.

notes:

knowing that the dlg ctfmon.exe was just e-mule, I ran HJT, fixed that ctfmon, and deleted the file from my C drive. (still have the zipped copy)I also deleted all the temp files; this resolved my C:\ drive space issues.

In looking through the sub-folders of dlg though, I found a statistics.ini file. Doesn't say *where* the shared files were/are, but shows how much data has been shared. Do you want any of the files shown in the image attached to this post?

Blacklight scan found nothing, see bottom for logfile.

while having 'show hidden files & folders' on;
C:\windows\sys32\drivers\xztbnqbr.sys was not found,
C:\windows\sys32\sznhsfqp6.exe was not found
C:\windows\sys32\vapicqmi.exe was found;
zipped and posted to Thespykiller.co.uk's forum. (post is under url)

CMD.exe results also in screen shot attached to post.

one reboot later...

C:\windows\sys32\vapicqmi.exe was deleted.
D:\WINNT\system32\AST.exe was deleted.
D:\WINNT\gsi.exe was NOT FOUND
D:\WINNT\unast.exe was NOT FOUND

At this point, the system is running smoothly; web-based e-mail sites are open in both IE and Opera v.9, and no problems keeping it from closing. Deleting the temp files associated with the dlg\ctfmon.exe file resolved the space issues, so I'm happier about that. There's still a file in the temp folder under local settings on the C:\ drive that arn't deleting: an Index.dat file inside a content.ie5 folder.

I also just checked the dlg\config\ folder and looked in the preferences.ini. There's some references to backup files in the E:\ drive. makes me think the system isn't quite clean yet. I'm inclined to drop into that backup folder and delete anything that looks connected to emule.

[edit] after actually looking for the backup folders listed in the pref.ini file, it can't be found/doesn't exist.[/edit]

[edit2]so I looked a little more carefully in the pref.ini file, and there's a listing for an incoming directory. the contents of THAT directory (sys32\dlgincoming\.... *facepalm* right below \sys32\dlg...) contain a few of the video files described in the downloads.txt I linked earlier. A couple of those files are attributed to NetGladiator in the title. Makes me think it was the person who ripped the files, but I don't know. There's also a zip file in the incoming folder that contains what looks to be a ripped CD in mp3 format. The zip is titled Celldweller, so that might be the band name. (band name isn't listed on the mp3s themselves... I hate when people don't title a media file properly...) I havn't deleted the files, but there's 800 some odd megs worth in the folder, so I don't have a problem deleting that too.[/edit2]

[edit3] Experienced another browser shut down about 10 minutes after posting here, while trying to clean out the Spam folder of my web-mail. geekstogo.com hasn't prompted a shutdown though, so there is improvement.[/edit3]

Even though that "ctfmon.exe" was an emule...my concern is who/what put it there?
I don't think we are quite clean yet and would like to look deeper.
Makes me wonder if your box wasn't used for a warez server of sorts. :whistling:

If you can zip up that dlg\config directory and upload it to where you uploaded the others please?
Also the dlg\logs directory please if it isn't crazy big. If its all text files in there they should compress nicely.
Logs might give a clue how this was installed in the first place.

If you didn't download whatever is in the \incomming directory then by all means -- get rid of it.

Nice screeny. :help:
What you showed in the cmd window was what I expected to see. :)

What is in dlgincomming? (shown right below the dlg_ctfmon.zip in your screeny)
It does look related to that "emule"
<edit> Yes I see the explanation in your post now. If you didn't put those there...get rid of em. Is there any ini files in there? logs?

Did you install these p2p programs?:

uTorrent
BitTorrent
limewire

Not asking to give ya crap about it...just need to know if it is your doing or...

Onto another log...

Download Gmer from here:

http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it.
Disconnect from internet & shut down Antivirus to prevent conflicts.
Shut down also any other unneeded apps including any open browser windows.
The less stuff we got running the less chance of false positives in log.
Double click gmer.exe to run it.
Allow driver to install if asked (gmer.sys)
You may warning at program start that there is possible rootkit activity and do you want to run scan.

Say OK to run scan.
If no warning, just press "scan".
Let the scan finish. It will take a while so please be patient.
Once done press "copy"
Open notepad> press "ctrl+v" to paste log.
Save log.

Re-enable your antivirus, re-connect to internet & post that log here
If it's too large to copy/paste please attach it.

*note*
Not all what is listed in log means rootkit. Some softwares install low level drivers that "hook" the system. These may show in logs and many are normal.

Thanks :)

ps.

There's still a file in the temp folder under local settings on the C:\ drive that arn't deleting: an Index.dat file inside a content.ie5 folder

This is normal. Index.dat is always in use and therefore cannot be deleted using normal methods.
If you want to clean those up you can use Index.dat Suite:

http://support.it-ma...=index.datsuite

Follow instructions on the site how to use.
Don't delete the Index.dat files marked in Red! from the scan or you will break Windows help & support.
It sets up a batch file to run once at boot to delete the undeletables.

I hate when people don't title a media file properly

Yeah...so do I. I once downloaded what I thought was a photoshop tutorial of sorts and it turned out to be p0rn. Hours and hours of downloading to turn out junk.
I pretty much gave up on p2p years ago.

so, what I'm getting from that online scans you posted is that vapicwmi.exe is bad news.

and yeah, since I havn't used e-donkey in years, I wonder who/what put emule in there too.
'specially since I don't use the C drive for running programs unless the instalation
doesn't give me the option of changing locations.

there arn't any logs that I saw in the incomming folder. I'll upload the contents of the
config folder next time I'm home; IE6 seems to be running ok on the computer now, though
I'm still leery about checking sensitive websites (like paypal or my credit card statements)

Utorrent, Bittorrent and limewire are all my installations. I'm looking pretty hard at
removing limewire, since I've been getting more success with torrents than p2p ever gave me.

If index.dat is supposed to be there, that's fine by me. what flagged my concern was the
IE5 folder it was in, instead of IE6.

Also an adjustment... I tried a fresh install of Opera 9.1, and things are running smoothly all over. I'm trying to catch up on some missed work at the moment, but I'll run the scans you've requested soon. The dlg directory (incl. zipped ctfmon.exe file) should be uploaded soon.

Hi

I'll check for the upload. <edit> I got the dlg_folder. Thanks.
Looks like just a pile of settings and such for that "emule"
I have not yet looked close at all the files.
I do believe you can empty out that folder.

If index.dat is supposed to be there, that's fine by me. what flagged my concern was the
IE5 folder it was in, instead of IE6.

Content.ie5 is a normal folder even if you are running IE6 or 7.
Why MS does not change the temporary internet files directory names...I don't know.

I'd be a little leary on logging into sensitive web sites as well till we know for sure you are clean.

IMO not much of any p2p software can be considered safe but at least with torrent software you can get into clubs where you have to join/be invited and have better chance of decent downloads & less corrupted junk stuff.
But.....
I simply don't trust them because I can't be sure of the source.

vapicwmi.exe looks to be a downloader that downloads adult content to your computer.
Busy little fella it was.
Kinda crazy looking if you don't understand but this is what that file does when run:
http://research.sunb....aspx?id=163544

Basically connects to crap sites> downloads & runs other files.

If you can find these files; delete them: Careful with the spelling please.

C:\WINDOWS\mynew.ocx
C:\WINDOWS\svcexe.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cmdsys.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcexe.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\XXXDownloader.ocx
C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkping.exe
C:\windows\system32\svchst.exe
c:\temp\cmdsys.exe
C:\temp\tmp.ocx

Adult Movies.exe off desktop if it exists
XXX Porn Finder.exe from your start menu folder if it exists

In addition to the log I asked for in last post can you also do a regsearch for me?:

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
http://www.xs4all.nl...s/regsearch.zip

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

XXXDownloader

then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.

Thanks! :whistling:
