Not completely sure what it is. I actually know very little about computers. But the SpySheriff pop-up was all over the place this morning, and here I am..

Click here to download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri). Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.

Please do not run any other options until you are asked to do so.

I am beside myself with how quickly you've responded.

I downloaded the program and opened smitfraudfix.cmd. When the new window appeared it read the following:

SmitFraudFix v2.135

FichierProcess.exe absent !
(then something in another language)

Process.exe file missing !
Unzip all the archive in a folder.

Press any key to continue...


-- I'm not sure what that means, and the last thing I want to do is go clicking around...

Simple solution that I'm missing?

Have you extracted the files from the zip or are you trying to run it from inside the zip folder?

Not too bad. Please print out or copy these instructions to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (whilst in Safe Mode). If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fix.

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can get there by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your arrow to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.

When back in Normal Mode, click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web and uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Then, download SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free version)
  • Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
  • It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
  • Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
    • Close browsers before scanning
    • Scan for tracking cookies
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Please leave the others unchecked.
    • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
  • On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
  • On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
  • Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
  • It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
  • To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
    • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
    • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
    • Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
  • Click close and close again to exit the program.
  • Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log and the new rapport.txt.

You may be able to figure it out by simply looking at those logs (I haven't a clue what they mean), but this little computer of mine is still acting up...

The only unusual event in the process was that in SmithFraudFix, while/After (?) cleaning, there was no mention of wininet.dll...
Not sure that I noticed anything else in particular that would be helpful.

Could you be a little more specific about 'acting up'?

Your logs look OK. Do this. Please download AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta from here and save it to your desktop.

Double click the file to install it. Accept the licence and follow the prompts to install and reboot. After rebooting, you should see the icon for AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta on your desktop. Double click it to open the program. You will see a window with 4 buttons at the bottom of it. Click Search For Rootkits and the program will start a scan, you will see the progress bar moving from left to right. When the scan is complete, a small window will open alerting you to the result. If anything was found, click Save Result To File and post that in your reply.

If nothing was found, please click the Perform in-depth Search saving anything found to file as before.

Neither of the two yielded any results.


As for acting up:
It takes far longer than necessary to access the internet. Once it's connected though, things run pretty smoothly -- except for opening mail and links. The computer also likes to ignore my attempts to open programs...namely AIM-- It just puts up the hourglass for a second, then forgets I even clicked it..
Other than that, I'm not quite sure, as I've tried to do as little on my computer as possible since the unwanted parties entered and the exorcism began.

Consider me scared for this machine.

Hmmm... I'm not sure it's malware related - click here to run ActiveScan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Paste the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply.

Well.
Panda ActiveScan refuses to go. It went at first and I submitted my information and clicked start, taking me to a smaller window that began preparation for downloading the necessary files, no mention of activeX download. The window stayed open for 20 minutes before i tried to start over, then on my next try I let it stay open and unprgressive for another 10ish mintues. Nothing.
Figuring it was due to not having the program ActiveX, I went to their website and downloaded the most popular one -- the control pad.
Tried once again to run the ActiveScan, but the small window now read :

Page cannot be displayed

da

HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error

So I went ahead and went back to the ActiveX setup, and removed the program.

Now it's still refusing to display the page.

Is there another effective online scan, or is there a simple tweak to fix this to allow me to run the ActiveScan?

Not much there. Find and delete:

C:\pz.exe

Click here to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. You will be prompted to reboot, do so.

Maybe try installing IE7, see if that helps - let me know.

OK. All is done.
File deleted with a removal program.
IE7 installed-- When I restarted my computer though, i had a "critical error" that windows 'saved me' from..
The report read:

Obviously I am clueless is that is relevant to any degree.

Still having the same exact problems as posted earlier...
Maybe there is some animal hanging out inside my actual tower...who knows..

Any other ideas? Or should I just take the computer out back?
