Windows Vista, the latest offering from Microsoft. Their flagship product thats supposed to be better than anything they have released before, cant remember how I like the icons on my desktop.

It seems simple enough, why worry about the icons? But when in a rush, I like to have things in order so that I can find them quickly. The way that Vista re-orders them when I reboot is completely random. Every time I start my computer, the icons are in a different order. This happens whether Auto Arrange is turned on or off.

This may or may not be related, but vista also cant remember that I want my second monitor turned on. XP always did. When I am in my office, I hook my laptop up to a second monitor. With windows XP, I would just turn it on and it was ready to go. With vista, I have to go into the display properties and turn it on every single time. Its a minor thing, but having to do it every day for no apparent reason is really annoying.

I am still using RC2 and have every available update for my software and drivers.

Ive got a pretty similar set up(two monitors specific arangement) and i havent had that problem, is this a recent thing or has it always done it?

Im using the launch version of Vista, and my icons do not auto arrange, and my desktop is always extended over to my 2nd monitor. Perhaps it is something that was fixed between RC2 and RTM?

Do either of you have a laptop and go home to a single monitor or do you keep your computer hooked up to the second monitor all the time?

I think thats the problem, if I reboot when I am at work and the monitor stays hooked up, then it stays on. When I take it home where I don't have a second monitor, the problem exists when I get back to work.

I have a laptop, but I don't hook it up to my 2nd monitor. And when I go home, I don't have a computer =(, unless I bring it with me

ScHwErV, I have the RTM version of Vista on my laptop....I don't have it hooked up to a second monitor, so the desktop icons stay put.

Hmm come to think of it when i unhooked my old second monitor to send it back it didnt remember the settings when i plugged it back into the new one it went back to the way i had it as a single monitor fortunately all i had done was move half over to the other monitor so it was easy to put back together. Although it comes back on as long as its the same monitor each time for me but its an ati card that might make a difference as there drivers are good.

Do you have the icons on both monitors when using dual if you do keeping them on one works for me, but this is a desktop so it probably handles it differently.

Warriorscot and Justin, do me a favor and shut down your computers. Unplug your second monitor and start your computer up. Then shut down and re-plug in the monitor. Just to see if that causes a problem. My bet is that it does, no matter the hardware.
