Games lagging

Hello, in games where my computer surpasses the recommended system requirements such as Civilization IV with the lowest video settings my computer runs the game very choppy and it lags quite a bit. I am running a Nvidia geforce fx go5200 64mb (nothing great, but is higher than the recommended requirements) and 768mb ram. I had upgraded my ram some time ago in hopes of solving the problem but no luck, and only started to play civIV again. is there any setting or, anything i can do to try and remedy my problem?
