I am running PC with Windows XP Pro on a new Dell Machine with plenty of horsepower. I have MS Office Word 2003. After I open word and then go to open a file by selecting File Open the open box which comes up takes an inordinately long time to become available, eg it is there but when I click the drop down box on the "Look in:" it sits there and thinks for a long time. It did not used to do this and was pretty fast??? Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated.

Well it depends. You say its a new machine. How new? It could be that you need to run a disk cleanup, and a defrag. To do this...

Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Cleanup.... ------Repeat first four steps------ --> Disk Defrag..

These two programs will speed up your computer. But it could also be a spyware problem. I've only had spy-ware affect my Office when it was 180ax .. but it could be something else.

Hope this is helpful.

[SIZE=7]I have had this problem recently start on my computer as well, I have firewall, Av.Antispyware etc all up to date and finds nothing, What i have figured out is by disabling my network card it fixes the problem, Maybe it's searching all network drives, although why start slowing down all of a sudden. This may point someone in the right direction. If i find a fix i'll let you know.

I finally worked this one out, I had changed my networking from workgroup to log onto to domain, Once i changed back tp correct workgroup, searches are now quick again. Incorrect workgroup name or domain name must screw things up a bit, must be looking for shares etc that are no longer available. Hope this helps
