I am another newbie idiot. I am attempting my first build.

Mobo: ASUS P5GD2 Deluxe
CPU: Intel 3.2 540J
Graphics: Chaintech GeForce 6600 GT
Memory: Corsair Value Select 512MB x2
HD: WD 80GB x2 RAID 0
Case and PSU: Aspire X-Navigator, 500W (20 pin)

The Mobo has a 24 pin receptor. The Aspire PSU is 20 pin. ASUS web page FAQ states this shouldn't be a problem. What do you all think?

Everything fires up for between 15 to 24 secs, beeps once, nothing comes on the monitor. I've trying disconnecting everything but the CPU, and graphics card--no go.

I've been trying to contact ASUS tech support, e-mail and via phone. No returned help. :tazz:

Hi,
I have not seen the 24 pin receptor yet and have not seen it on psu's either so it must be new and my guess would be Asus would not make a board that supports very few psu's, plus if Asus says no problem to use a 20 pin I would tend to believe them.

The beep indicates that the board is working but for a additional test try removing the ram and power on to see if you get 1 long intermittent beep. Then try reinstalling the ram and removing the video card and power on to see if you get different beeps. If you get beeps when doing both then this indicates that the cpu,mbo and ram are good and I would suspect a bad video card

Could you try a different grapics card even if its pci just to see if you can get a post? The one beep indicates the post starts but maybe it stops after the 15 to 20 seconds because of no video.

Oh btw you are not a idiot for trying to build a computer, once you get it up and running you will come to realize how much better it is then brand computers plus with all that you have learned you will never need that stinking tech support again well except for GTG.

This is a follow-up. Thanks Dolby for your input. I figured out the problem myself. I am now typing from my new build. ASUS tech support has still not contacted me back.

Anyway, for anyone else who may experience a similar problem, I went thing EVERYTHING for the fifth time. I noticed the front Speaker wire plug from the Aspire case that connects into the 4 orange pins on the mobo did not match the positive and negative wires. I disassembled the plug and moved the black ground and bingo. I am now typing on my build.

But alas, I am still not completely satisfied. I am having difficulty setting up a RAID 0 array. But this is another topic...
