I heard someone say multiple ad/spy/malware scanners are bad and decrees the performance of your PC. I thought this was only with anti virus programs?

You only need one firewall of course, and one a/v. You also only need one Anti-spyware with real time scanning/shields. You can have others installed (just like with a/v's)...but keep the real time protection disabled, and only use them for on-demand scanning.
