hello!

i'm a real newbie when it comes to networking, and so i'm trying to learn a bit more by undertaking what might, admittedly, be a rather ambitious project considering my lack of expertise.

nevertheless, i'm trying to connect a laptop (running Slackware 10.0) to a desktop (running XP Pro) via a Netgear DG834 V2 router.

i've managed to establish an internet connection without a great deal of difficulty, but i'd really like to be able to share files between the two machines.

is what i'm trying to achieve even possible?

i've read that you can do something similar using the Samba server, which appears to be bundled with Slackware 10.0, but every on-line tutorial that i've read seems to fail at some point.

i'm really not expecting anyone to walk me through this step by step (although that would be great :whistling: ), but if somebody could give me a few pointers then i'd be very pleased.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
