Hi

I have tried all sorts of software on my PC and they all say I have a XP2500 CPU...So I even took the fan off to check the number on it but it is definately a 2600 Barton.

I was told I have probably got my settings incorrect in the BIOS?

My MB is an MSI KT3 ultra2 (MS 6380E ver 1)

Can anyone let me know what would probably need changing in the BIOS so that everything reads correctly and therefore my PC will hopefully perform fractionally better?

Please treat me as thick and give me a step by step guide. I assume I do not use any of the MSI utilities to change anything?

There’s nothing wrong with your settings,

Its all to do with bus speed x clock multiplier,

Multiplier’s go up in increments of .5 ie 15.5 16 16.5

Bus 333 x 7.5 = 2497.5

Its rounded off to 2500

No need to change anything

Then I am confused.
The last processor I had on this MB was also an XP2600 but that showed up as an XP2600 and showed it running at over 2Ghz (i think it was 2.06Ghz)...I cannot understand why this XP2600 would show as an XP2500 and running at 1900Ghz because it is meant to be the same processor (both are the Barton 333Mhz)?

The best thing is to check the part number on the CPU, as you can see the differences in the
Multiplier, FSB, and frequency.

I will double check to see if the other cpu is definatley an XP2600 barton 333Mhz too ...

I still do not understand why cpu recognition software and DXDIAG reveal the XP2600 333Mhz that is in the PC at the moment to be a XP2500 Barton 333Mhz instead of a 2600? Surely if all settings are correct why would it show a different cpu installed? What would be the point of this kind of software and why would my own OS also show incorrect cpu...seems strange to me:(

Ahh well the other cpu that showed up as a XP2600 is in fact a thoroughbred model running 333Mhz ....Still none the wiser why the 2600 barton 333Mhz shows as a 2500 althought the Mhz seem to be correct at 1900.

whoa there! a CPU's model has nothing to do with its speed! if you overclock an XP2600, will it say you have a XP3600? no.

anyways, there could be a few sources of your problem.

please go into BIOS and see what it says your CPU is. (press F2, F10, Del, or Esc at startup... one of those usually causes your computer to enter BIOS. If not, try any F button. Also read your computer's manual.)

If BIOS says its a 2600, then the software you used simply wasn't coded to properly recognize it as a 2600.

Well, post back here with what BIOS says it is.

Which part of the BIOS reveals what CPU I am using? I cannot find anywhere that tells me? I would assume that I would need to open one of those hidden areas maybe? The only details regarding cpu were clock speeds or similar and temperature/voltage.

hmm... well, if it wasn't with the other CPU details... it probably isn't there at all...

please go to this site to download and run CPU-Z. See what it calls your CPU.

Also, have you checked what Windows Xp calls it? If not, go to Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System.

On the very first tab when you open "System", it should name your CPU.

I was using CPUz and it says I am using an Athlon XP2500 Barton 333Mhz

The system says exactly the same... This is why I thought that maybe there need to be a slight change to the BIOS setting to get everything to read it as an XP2600?

Well, whaddya know? Looking at MSI's site, they came out with a BIOS update for your mobo because it didn't properly recognize XP2400's and XP2600's. Try updating your BIOS to this one: BIOS

Thanks for that but running the MSI Live update for the latest bios was the first thing I did before installing this cpu. Any other ideas?

The BIOS there is MS 6380E Version 1. This BIOS is MS 6380E Version 5.6.

Sorry I was referring to the original version of the MB when I purchased it...ie the version that is written on it.

Alright, I have another idea, but I need you to do some things for me.

In BIOS, what speed does it say your CPU is running at? And what speed is the FSB running at? Is this info identical to what CPU-Z says?
