Same thing. The reference disappears immediately after the "fix." The reference reappears immediately after the reboot.

I have attached two HiJack This logs. The first is the log immediately following the "fix" and before the reboot.

The second HiJack This log is immediately following the reboot. Note that the reference to vivrzi.exe which was gone from log 1 has now reappeared in log 2.

Here is log one -- immediately following the "fix" but before the reboot.

1. Open Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit again. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later.

C:\WINNT\system32\vivrzi.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\nrnd.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

2. Open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\vivrzi.exe

3. Then post a new Hijackthis log here in a reply.

No good.

KillBox easily deleted the nrnd.exe file as well as the dummy file it had created earlier to replace vivrzi.exe. But upon reboot the real vivrzi.exe file had returned (32,256 bytes vs. the 56 byte KillBox dummy file) and the vivrzi reference had returned. See the HiJack This log below:

I am have stumbled into the name of the file that creates this vivrzi.exe upon boot but I'm leary of just assuming that I am correct and deleting it. After the last set of actions that resulted in the real vivrzi.exe rearing its ugly head again, I decided to use KillBox again to replace it with a dummy file by the name of vivrzi.exe. When I rebooted the same thing happened as the last time that KillBox created the dummy file ... but this time I was quicker to read the file names that came up. The first box up referred to NTVDM.exe. I found it in \WINNT\SYSTEM32. There is also a similarly named file called NTVDMD.dll

My thought is that the NTVDM.exe causes the creation of vivrzi.exe at time of boot if vivrzi.exe is not sitting out on the hard drive already. My only evidence for this are these boxes that come up empty but referring to NTVDM.exe and VIVRZI.exe in the top banner when the dummy vivrzi.exe file is found on the hard drive. Also I used the good ole DOS type command and while I can't read the gibberish that appears both vivrzi.exe and ntvdm.exe have a little piece of text that reads Rich (my suspicion is that is a person's name--probably the author of this ugly code).

At the same time that I feel I might be right, I hate to rush in and just delete these ntvdmd files. Do you have a reaction to what I am saying? Do you have any suggestion about it?

I discovered my sleuthing and finding NTVDM.exe was not a bingo. Apparently NTVDM.exe is a legitimate file for DOS users.

BUT I think you might be on the track with this FindIt diagnostic. The file JqvGne.017 looks promising because it is dated on the day this laptop started to fall to pieces.

Here is the Find It log:

An email just came to me saying there was a reply but I didn't find anything new. I saw two requests for the Find It log. I did send it already. Did you get it?

Download FindQoologic from http://forums.net-in...=post&id=134981
Extract (unzip) the files inside into their own folder called FindQoologic.
Open the FindQoologic folder. Preferable to your desktop.
Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it.
wait until a text opens, post it in a reply to your thread.

C:\WINNT\JMJAN.DLL
C:\WINNT\System32\TSTPYSI.DLL
C:\WINNT\System32\ADANR.DLL
C:\WINNT\System32\WINUP2~1.DLL
C:\WINNT\System32\BDBCADN.EXE
C:\WINNT\System32\PWPQU.DAT
C:\docume~1\alluse~1\startm~1\programs\startup\NRND.EXE
C:\WINNT\system32\bdbcadn.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

2. Search for the file wmconfig.cpl and tell me if you see it.

3. Then post a new FindQoologic and Hijackthis log.

All but three files deleted easily in Killbox. The three that I ended up using the "Delete on Reboot" function are:
tstpysi.dll
nrnd.exe
bdbcadn.exe

After the reboot, I searched for them and found all three in a directory called:
c:\!Submit.

I searched for wmconfig.cpl throughout the hard drive and could not find it.

The FindQoologic follows:

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE.
