Hello,

First I would just like to say thank you to whoever created this amazing site. I was finally able to get rid of the popups!

I would also like to know how to stop some applications from automatically running on startup. When I go into task manager 58 programs are opened and running and I doubt they are all necessary.

Anyone know how I can list these Processes for you without having to type them all out?

And how I can get rid of any of the unecessary memory eaters that open every time I startup?

Thanks in advance,

Jon

Hi, and welcome to Geeks to Go! Thanks for the kind words.

To see the list of processes and applications that start with Windows, click the Start button, Run..., and type in MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup tab. Browse the list. You may have to widen the "Command" column to get a better idea of what the item is. If you don't want it to start with Windows, uncheck it. You can also choose "Selective Startup" from the General Tab, uncheck "Load Startup Items", which will prevent any of them from starting. The next time Windows loads after you've made changes in MSCONFIG, you'll get a popup box about the changes. Just click "Don't show this again" and OK.

The only way I know of to get a list of the processes in Task Manager is to take screen shots (ALT+PRTSCN), then paste the images into WordPad, Paint, or some other graphics program. If you want to attach them to your thread, be sure to save them as JPG format, because I don't think BMPs will attach. Or alternatively, zip files will attach.

If this isn't what you needed, please post back.

The problem with stopping stuff with msconfig is that the program still exists on the computer, sleeping yes but still there.

I suggest you visit our malware removal section and after going through the steps mentioned there, placing a hijackthis log of the situation your computer is in.
