It's all still there.

Let's disable system restore. Do not enable until we get it cleaned up.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

You have a number of randomonly named files on your system. We like to start with an online virus and trojan scan. Even though you have antivirus software on your system, it can become corrupted by malware.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

Please scan your system with Ad-aware:
Ad-aware SE - Download - Home Page
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

O.K. I have done everything you asked me to do.

When I ran Housecall, it came back with the following:

TROJ AGENT.QH
Non-cleanable
C:\PROGRAMFILES\COMMONFILES\JAVA\flencpy.exe

TROJ LOADER.C
CAN NOT ACCESS
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\colhits.exe

TROJ LOADER.D
CAN NOT ACCESS
C:\WINDOWS/SYSTEM32\crempntw.exe

On the last two, I got the message "Unable to clean because currently in use"

When I ran the other cleaner, it came back with the following:

C:\document and settings\owner\local settings\temp\autoupdate0\auto_update_install.exe
Trojan: Apropop
Action: Cleaned (deleted)

C:\program files\cxtpls\ace.dll
Trojan: Apropop
Action: Error

Here is the new HijackThis log that I just ran:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\crempntw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\colhits.exe
c:\Program Files\bpc_search\<<entire folder

Do I need to stay in safe mode when I rerun adaware and a new hijackthis log or do I delete the files, then reboot as normal, and then run adaware and a new hijackthis log?

Sorry. My brain and mouth and fingers don't work well together. ;)

You can run adaware in safe or normal mode. When you're through, delete the files found by adaware. Then, reboot and then post a new log. Always reboot before posting a new log.

O.K. I have done everything that you asked me to do. I didn't have any problems, except when I was checking off all of the items on the hijackthis log, two of the showed something a little different so I did not put a check by them. You said to check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [73ET38i] crempntw.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [M0x3RUGmV] colhits.exe

In the hijackthis log, they showed up as:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [73ET38i] dsurtmgr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [M0x3RUGmV] dspmgr.exe

I did not see the crempntw.exe and the colhits.exe in the processes area of the task manager or the file when I went to delete the ones you asked me to delete. I did see the files for dsurtmgr and dspmgr, so I deleted them. I hope that didn't mess anything up. But I looked at the date created on both of the files and it showed created 4/8/05 (I think that's the correct day it showed, but I know it was just recently)

Here's a copy of the hijackthis log that I ran after doing everything else

On that date for the two files that I mentioned in my previous posting, I was incorrect. The date showed 4/22/05 and the time was like 12:something a.m.

Post a new hijackthis log.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I downloaded L2mfix and saved it to my desktop. I then installed it from my desktop and double clicked on the new folder. I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to click on next to run the option #1. The following is what I see when I double click on the new folder:

backregs
direct (text document)
12mfix (MS-DOS batch file)
Ntrights
readme (text document)
RegDACL (Manager for registry DACLS)
strings
regfixes
fixautont.html (internet shortcut)
locate (MS-DOS Application)
process (Command Line Process Utility)
reboot (reboot utility)
second (MS-DOS batch file)
zip

Which one of these do I need to double click on to get to where I enter #1 for Run Find Log?
