The upgrade path and the fact that AM2 systems are almost as cheap as 939 here at least is the only reason i would go against admins advice, DDR memory is cheaper but its not by much and its getting short in supply making the prices higher than they should be.

That system would be fine for a plodding machine but without knowing a little more about its specs and how long its been used then i cant really recommend it, for gaming it wouldn't be fantastic the card and CPU are under powered and the memory on the slow side and about a Gb short of what you are aiming for.
