I found a link at Microsoft that details the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
I reinstalled XP on a HP laptop with a AMD Athlon 64 bit processor, and according to the Microsoft Post you have to contact the manufacturer but its 6 months out of warranty and they won't talk to me, though its "their" hardware problem that is causing the OS not to reinstall.

Here's the link to the microsoft post concerning my problem.

here's what someone else told me about the problem.

OK. I read the article and it was just as I suspected. We need to
supply the
HAL driver for the AMD processor during setup. This is the "Wintel"
relationship I was talking about. If the laptop had a Intel chip then
it
would work just fine but Microsoft makes it harder for the AMD
processor
since it is in competition with Intel.

When you put in the XP CD from boot - continuously tap F7 when you see the blue screen, tap for about 10 seconds and try again.

F7 did not do anything, it still continues to hang

I was able to install ME, put in an xp upgrade cd, installed the files but when it gets to the point of loading installation files, again it hangs.
