Hello everybody hope your all having a great day,

I'm trying to open my project which I've spent over 4 months on but now I can't (GCSE coursework for those who knows what it is).

Everytime I try to open it it asks me to select the encoding that makes my document readable.
I've tried all the options but none of them makes my document readable....
This project was due in today but because I can't even open it the teacher has gave me an extra week to hand it in before I get 0 marks.

If you don't know what I'm talking about then please see the screenshot.

Some additional information if it helps:
  • I'm running Office 2007 on Windows Vista ultimate.
  • The document was made in Word 2003 at school.
  • The whole document is in English.
  • The document is a .doc file so I dont think it should be a problem.
Thanks for any help.
If you need any more information then please ask me.

Thanks in advance

Here's the link to Word 2003 Viewer. It might help in a pinch.

I'm still looking into the root of the problem.

Does this even look familiar? It discusses compatibility mode and converting prior versions of documents to 2007 format. http://office.micros...44751033.aspx#2

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I've tried the word viewer and it came up with an error saying it can't open the file :whistling:.
I also can't do the thing from the microsoft link becuase the main file wont even open (It won't let me click the office button unless the document is opened - I can't even open the document because of that encoding message).

P.S I have 2 copies of the file and both of them don't work (both from before I installed vista to my laptop).

No I haven't tried it on the PC it was made on - It's a school pc and it's half-term ATM (I get a week off school). The earliest I can get to the pc it was made on is the 21st.
They won't allow anyone to use the computer rooms at break/ lunch anymore because of the amount of people doing things they shouldn't be with school property...

I will try opening the document at school :whistling:

P.S the last program I've used to edit the file was office 2007, which is what I'm trying to use now.

+++++

A basic timeline of the file:

1) The document was made in word 2003 (since september 2006)
2) The document was edited in word 2007- saved a new copy as a word 92-2003 document (.doc file) (2 days ago)
3) I then formatted my computer for windows vista (yesterday)
4) Now I'm left with this document that won't open.

Thanks for all the help so far

I have 2 copies of the files but none of them can be read properly by word.
Both desktop and laptop.

Tried word viewer 2003, word 2003, word 2007. None of them works...

Is it corrupted? If it is I better start from scratch ASAP, I've got less than a week...

Thanks for all the input

Update:
I feel like an idiot now.

Somehow it sorted itself out so it's all good now. Let's hope it stays this way...if not I'll reply to this thread again.

Thanks for all the reply
