JAVA problems

Hi.First time here.
Since I got my computer a few years ago, I have had no problems with JAVA.
Suddenly a couple of weeks ago, it stopped working so I can't access chat's in yahoo, play certain games, etc that was the norm for me for a long time. I tried updating the new version . It says it is installed on my computer but then it says something intefered with it loading properly and I should do it again. And I have.Three times. FYI I cannot do the automatic download from the java site and have to do the manual one because something also stops my computer from doing that. Any ideas out there?
Please help because I run a couple of chat groups, and it is getting lonely now not being able to keep in contact with my friends. Thanks
