Hi, I am having problems running some games and applications on Vista (32-bit) - I double click the icon, and the load circle thing comes up for a few seconds and then nothing happens. The application is running in Task Manager, but it never actually loads. I have tried using XP SP2 compatibility mode.

I thought I would install Virtual PC to run XP for the apps that weren't working but it says this when I try to run it:
"Virtual PC cannot find MSXML 4. Please reinstall Virtual PC or install MSXML 4 and try again."
Reinstall makes no difference. How do I install MSXML 4? This used to work fine on XP!

Well Vista is a great looking operating system, but I'm dual booting my system because I know some things aren't compatible in both. If your games won't work in compatibilty mode, run them as adminstrator and see if that makes a difference.

I know in Call of Duty 2 you have to run the game as administrator to play online or punkbuster will kick ya. Also make sure you have the most up to date driver for Vista...

Yeah try running as administrator some programs need admin privelages to run because it needs more access to the hard drive.

I tried running the apps as administrator, and they still didn't load (the EXE was running in task manager though). I have gone back to XP for now anyway.

Hi Vista User,
I suggest disabling UAC as one step.

Select the “Start” menu button
Select “Setting”
Open the “Control Panel”
Select “User Accounts and Family Safety”
Select “User Accounts”
Select “Turn User Account Control on or off”
Make sure the “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer” check box is empty (disabled).
Select the OK button.
Close all windows and restart your machine.

This has solved several problems I have encountered. This feature is bad enough that Apple has based one of it's major marketing campaigns on it.

We don't recommend disabling User Account Control. First check with the publisher to see if an update is available for Vista. If not, most program compatibility problems can be solved by running in Windows XP compatibility mode, and/or by running as administrator. Both options can be accessed via the right-click menu (right click the icon used to start the program).

I disabled User Account Control after 5 minutes because it annoyed me so much. I am running the programs in XP compatibility mode, and "as Administrator" and they do not load.

Also, on a separate issue - my USB game pad does not work with Vista either. There are no Vista-specific drivers for it, but it appears in Device Manager as USB Human Interface Device, and Vista says the hardware was successfully installed. However, it does not appear as an option in the game.

Gamepad wise unless you can get a driver for it from windows update or the manufacturer you wont have much luck although if its 32bit vista try installing the XP driver it sometimes works. UAC is a good thing to have on its annoying for a couple of days especially at the start bt after all youre apps are installed and it figures out what you use allot it appears less often at the moment its appearing like once a week and its a second to click continue.

What is the application in question?
