:tazz: I had received an XP-SP2 CD from MS and when I put it in my drive, different problems occurred. I cleared up most of them but have two remaining.
One is that I no longer can put my PC in standby. The other is I am unable to open the system information service. I have tried to update the registry with a new entry received from MS. I have tried windows management instrumentation services and it does have the help and support services field avail. I have no idea how to get the standby back on, and I don't want to put in that CD again. I did try to boot from the WIN XP cd in safe mode, but that didn't work either because no matter what I did when i got to the screen with modify, repair etc...it just locked up the pc. Had to pull the plug to get it to shut down to get to restart. Any help is appreciated. Walter

Hi anchor100 and welcome to the forum

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.
Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp

Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.
