I have a Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6372 in my laptop that suddenly stopped reading any Disc. Now everything I put in the drive (CD, DVD; data, music, video, blanks) results in a message, "The disk media is not recognized. It may not be formatted (1785)". I have run the Troubleshooter, removed/reinstalled drivers, but all along Device Manager reports the device is working properly, and no conflicts are reported.

Any ideas? Or is the drive toast..? BTW, this is not a modular drive assembly, so I can't swap it out to check it with another... sigh.

Could be the laser-lens has got dirty or covered with sufficient dust to stop it reading. A CD-type laser-lens cleaner (the ones that have a little brush on one side) may do the trick.

I have one of those, I might try it on mine before I toss it.

Having tried the cleaning disc route three times, I was about to ask for your next suggestion when I decided instead to try a few more times.... and after running it through twice more-- it worked! Thanks for goading me into trying again.
