Greetings from Montana,

I constantly run my spyware, adware, and virus protection software, but it seems some critters have got their claws on my system and won't let go. I am curently getting pop-ups for loadingwebsite.com, partypoker.com, and a few other unknowns.

I have run Spyware Doctor, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D all in safe mode with restore points turned off and internet disconnected.

Below is the current HJ log results AFTER running those scans.

I'll be thankin' ya' kindly if anyone can lead me through the steps to get rid of these popup critters.

Hi and welcome silverbow_mtn

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Well it gave us what we were looking for just the same,

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

OK, Lets see if we can sqaure this away for you,
Probably a good idea to print out these instructions,

Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Don't do anything with it yet, Just unzip it to your Desk Top,

Next,
Please open HJT> Click on the Config button> Click >Misc. Tools > Click > Open Process manager> Highlight “
nvirnv.exe
n20050308.exe
“ >Click> Kill process>
Next click the scan button and put a check mark next to the following, close all open windows , Click “ Fix Checked”

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapp...://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvirnv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nsvcin] C:\WINDOWS\system32\n20050308.exe

Reboot to safe mode ( by tapping the F8 key on start up ) make sure you can view all hidden folders/files View Hidden Folders search for and delete the following in BOLD

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvirnv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\n20050308.exe

Now open up Hoster
Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program

Restart your computer, restart HJT and post back a fresh log

Hey don,

Let the problems begin.

Here's what I ran into.
1. In the HJT Process Manager, I was able to locate nvirnv.exe, but was not able to locate n20050308.exe. So I killed the first one only.

2. After running the scan, however, I was able to locate ALL items, including n20050308.exe. Erased all of those.

3. Rebooted into safe mode and again was only able to find nvirnv.exe, but am unable to delete it. Tried two boots into safe mode, redoing all instructions, but still unable to delete.

4. So, not knowing if A was related to B, I did NOT open Hoster and "Restore Original Hosts".

Here's a new HJT log.

Looks good, Lets see if we can get this last one,

Download Pocket Killbox from. Here Paste the full file path (C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvirnv.exe ) in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes"

Next,
Go ahaed and run Hoster,

Next,
Please run these two online scans. Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

You should try to delete any files that these scanners are unable to clean. Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.

Then scan again with HijackThis and post another log.

Hi Don, sorry for the slow reply. Those online scans take some time, eh?

Anyway, here's the latest progress report.

1. Used Pocket Killbox to get rid of nvirnv.exe.

2. Ran the Hoster

3. The TrendMicro Housecall came back with 2 infections - JAVA BYTEVER.A AND JAVA BY TEVER.C, which were both listed as being in the Sun Java folder, so I just dumped the entire folder, as nothing else important was in there.

4. The ActiveScan came back with many infections, but reported that all were successfully deleted.

Here is that scans result, followed by a fresh HJT log.

Hi again sorry for the late reply,,

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ActiveX.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system\UpdInst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvirnv.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Next,
Go Here download and install Cleanup!
Open the program, Click on Cleanup and let it do its thing, Click yes to reboot, It will likely clean a bit more,

Next,

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Run a scan with Ad-aware have it fix all it finds Reboot,

Run another scan with the 2 online scans again, Post back a fresh log when done please

Hi Don, here's the latest.

Regarding these 3 files...
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ActiveX.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system\UpdInst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvirnv.exe

...when I used the Killbox and used just the regular delet option, it reported that all 3 had been deleted. However, upon restart, that pesky nvirnv.exe had returned, so I went back in and had it deleted upon reboot.

Downloaded, installed, and ran Cleanup! with no problems.

Ran Ad-Aware with updated definitions and it came back empty.

And here's a new HJT..........

Don, the nvirnv.exe is the file that will not flush. Everytime I go to do any of the processes to get rid of it, it comes right back on the reboot, even doing the "delete on reboot". System restore points were deleted and turned off also.

And when I manually go after it and try to delete it, I can't delete it either.
