I have a laptop that may have a defective harddrive.
The hd also has Windows XP and other software that came with it on the hd.
How can I backup this hidden section?

well, if you just care about your files like you pics, music, back them up using a thumbdrive or some other means.

If you want to actually back up everything, i would recommend an imaging program such as norton ghost.

what is the current state of the laptop? will it boot? one thing i would recommend is to run speedfan and use it to check the smart data of your drive, this will give you a better understanding of where the drive is at. also you may want to download the manufacturers software to test the drive, in some cases you can actually repair its problems. who makes your hard drive?
