Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper (or possibly this 11F#`I)

*NOTE* Make sure it says HELPER as there is a Remote Procedure Call and a Remote Procedure Call Locator which are both legitimate.

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Open HiJackThis, click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy & paste!):

11F#`I

*IMPORTANT NOTE* Make sure there is a SPACE before the first "1" otherwise it won't work!

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.

Post a new HiJackThis log after it reboots and let me know if you had any problems.

After posting your next HiJackThis log PLEASE do me a favor and do not restart, log off or shutdown your computer until asked to do so. This way I don't have to keep changing your "fix". Thank you.

Please print these instructions before continuing!!

First, I need you to right click on the desktop and go to New > Folder - click on it and name it whatever you want. Locate HiJackThis.exe on the desktop right click on it and go to "cut", then go into the folder you just made and click "paste". This is to ensure backups are saved and accessible.

Your infection requires various programs in order to fix. Please download the programs listed below, but do not run them yet:

1) About:Buster:
*Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
*Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
*Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
*Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
*If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
*You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run a scan. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".

1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Network Security Service (or possibly this: 11F#`I)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continuously tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: Fix button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run AboutBuster and save the logs
*Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
*Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
*Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
*Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
*Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
*When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.

Run CleanUp!
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
In the Ad-Aware main window, click on the gear icon at the top of the screen to open the preferences window. In the "General" window, make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically save log-file
2) Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
3) Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Click the "Scanning" button on the left-hand side and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Scan within archives
2) Scan active processes
3) Scan registry
4) Deep scan registry
4) Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
5) Scan my Hosts file

Please also click on "Select drives & folders to scan" and select your hard drive(s). Then click the "Advanced" button on the left-hand side and make sure all the options under "Log-file Detail Level" are selected. Next, click the "Tweak" button on the left-hand side. Click on "Scanning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Unload recognized processes & modules during scanning
2) Obtain command line of scanned processes
3) Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Click on "Cleaning Engine" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Always try to unload modules before deletion
2) During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
3) Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
4) Delete quarantined objects after restoring

Finally, click on "Safety Settings" and make sure the following options are selected:
1) Automatically select problematic objects in results lists
2) Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)

Click on "Proceed" to save the preferences. Then please click the "Start" button on the bottom left side to begin a scan. Select "Use custom scanning options" and then click "Next". Ad-Aware will then scan for malware. When it is finished, make sure any objects listed in RED are selected and click "Next" to remove the objects.

Reboot in normal mode.

Next, please press CTRL ALT DELETE and click on the "Processes" tab. End the following processes, if found:

apixm32.exe
msir.exe

Exit Task Manager.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet, all other programs and windows are closed and run HijackThis again. Please place a checkmark next to the following items, if they exist, and then click "FIX CHECKED" Make sure the only things checked are the entries below! These are mandatory:

Close HiJack This and reboot your computer into Safe Mode again. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8, then highlighting "Safe Mode" on the menu then hitting enter.

Be sure you're able to VIEW HIDDEN FILES

Using Windows Explorer delete these files (in bold), if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msir.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcng32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lwfly.dll

Reboot your computer in normal mode and post your AboutBuster log and a new HiJackThis log.

Hello Michelle,

Thanks for all your help and advice. I would not have had a clue how to fix my problem!

Did all you said except when I came to safe mode again to view hidden files a window came on screen as I was tapping F8. It said Select first boot device. I didn't know what to do so I could not view hidden files in safe mode.

Also my auto protect on my Norton has been disabled and ghas disappeared from my task bar.

Here are my logs for you to view :

*Go to Start > Run - Type msconfig click OK
*Under the General tab make sure "Normal Startup" is checked.
*Click on the Startup tab, scroll down and look for the Startup item "ccApp". If it's there, then make sure there is a checkmark by it. If it is not there, then we will manually add this file back into the registry (I will tell you step by step exactly how to do this).

Hello Michelle,

Checked as your instructions.

Normal set-up is checked.

However, in Start-up : "ccApp" is not there!

No problem :tazz:

You'll definitely want to print these out and follow these instructions exactly!

Go to Start > Run - type in:

regedit

Click OK.

Click the "+" next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Scroll down and click the "+" next to Software
Scroll down and click the "+" next to Microsoft
Scroll down and click the "+" next to Windows
Click the "+" next to Current Version
Then click ON the RUN folder (not the plus sign) - it will have a list of your startup items on the right side.
Now, right click on the RUN folder and go to New > String value
Name this value: ccApp
Then right click on ccApp and go to "Modify"
There will be a field called "Value data:" Enter the path below into that field. I would just copy exactly what I have below INCLUDING quotes and paste it into that field:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"

Click OK.

Exit regedit.

Restart your computer.

You will now be able to enable Norton.

Bingo!!

OK Michelle, Norton now enabled and back in task bar! Brilliant!

Am I OK now?

What about hidden files that I couldn't access in safe mode?

Well we'll just check it out right now (without being in Safe Mode)

Following these instructions so you can see hidden files:

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Then using windows explorer, try to see if you can find these files (You do NOT have to be in Safe Mode)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msir.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcng32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lwfly.dll

Most likely you won't find them because they're probably gone. If they are there then delete them.

Post one more HijackThis log to make sure you're good. :tazz:

Did as you said Michelle, but don't know how to find files using Internet Explorer!

Will I need to check boxes I unchecked later?

Unfortunately, I have to go to work now but I will look forward to your reply when I return.
