I have a Dell Latitude 510 with a clean hard drive & no recovery disks and it has only one bay for floppy & cd. I have a problem trying to install xp as cd drive won't load, suspect no drivers & when I load setup with floppys it doesn't reconise any cd installed because floppy is in use. Greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Do you have the CD-R to boot first in the BIOS?

Yes, I have it booting from the CD first, but it trys to boot but reverts back to Hard drive. The only thing I can think the CD drive may not be working. Thanks for your reply

Yes, the cd sounds like it wants to spin up, but does not sound like its at the normal speed when you insert a cd

Might have a bad CD-R.

Does the CD work with any other computer?
