I have gone through numerous websites to fix this problem. Several programs lock up or crash during a scan. AVG anti-spyware locks up and crashes and doesn't finish scanning. Spy sweeper doesn't show any problems. Spy-Bot doesn't show any problems. CCleaner crashes. Ive gone through your steps without success. Please help.

You will need to make a copy of these instructions because you have to disconnect from the internet to complete the fix. Either print them out or copy and paste them into Notepad.

Preparation

1) Download Fixwareout.exe by LonnyRJones from one of these two locations, and save it to your Desktop:

http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

2) Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and save it to your Desktop.
If you already have this program installed, skip to Updating AVG Anti-Spyware: below.

* Please note that this program was formerly known as Ewido anti-spyware 4.0.
Taken from the Ewido website -

ewido anti-spyware 4.0 will now continue under the new product name AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 contains the same ewido technology, but with some further enhanced features:

Highly improved cleaning
Lower resource usage
Additional languages supported

All current licenses for ewido anti-spyware 4.0 will continue to be valid, and users can change over to the new AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 for free.

Double click the avgas-setup file to begin installation and follow the prompts.
When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG A-S will open.
  • Updating AVG Anti-Spyware:

    By default AVG A-S is configured to update automatically so, if you have an active internet connection, it should do so following installation. If you are unsure whether or not it has done so, do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under "Manual Update" - click the Start update button.
  • Either AVG A-S will update or inform you that no update was available.
  • If you cannot access the internet with the infected PC, or you are having problems updating, you can download the signatures file from here.
    Once you have installed AVG A-S, double click avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to update it.

    Disabling the Resident Shield:
  • By default the Resident Shield is active but as it may interfere with the process of cleaning your PC, it will need to be disabled.
    (When the PC has been cleaned you can activate the shield again, if you wish.)
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under "Resident shield is..." - click active.
  • This should now change to inactive.

    Changing Recommended Actions
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under "How to act?" click Recommended actions and select "Quarantine" from the menu.
You can now close AVG A-S.

AVG A-S is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run in real-time alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
Both the Resident Shield and Automatic Updates will only be available for the thirty day trial period, after that AVG A-S will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and manually update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D etc.
Should you wish to benefit from the real-time protection, you will need to upgrade the program. To do this, simply open it and click on the Buy now button.

3) You will need to set Windows to show All Hidden Files and Folders.
Instructions can be found here.
** These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

Please Note: You will need to remain connected to the internet during this fix.

Removal

1) Double click Fixwareout.exe to start the Fixwareout Setup Wizard
  • Click Next > Install.
  • Ensure that the box to the left of Run fixit is checked.
  • Click on Finish.
  • Follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer - please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal.
  • When your system reboots, follow the prompts.
Afterwards HijackThis should launch by itself - if it does not, start it manually.

Click on 'Do a system scan only' and place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

** If you have any problems running Fixwareout, try fixing the O17 lines with HJT and then rerun the fix. Make sure that you run HJT where indicated and ensure that the lines are gone before proceeding with the rest of the fix. **

2) Go to Start > Control Panel >Network Connections. Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on Properties.
* Make a note of the settings before you change them just in case you need to put them back how they were.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice.

3) Go to Start > Run, enter cmd and click OK.
  • At the Dos Prompt Screen, type in cd\ and then press <ENTER>.
  • Now type in ipconfig /flushdns and then press <ENTER>. (notice the space after ipconfig)
  • Close the command prompt window.
4) Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
5) Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

6) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

7) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.

For I.E. 6 - under Temporary Internet files, click on Delete Files...
Check the box to the left of 'Delete all offline content' and then click on OK.

For I.E. 7 - under Browsing History, click delete...
Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files...

8) Ensure that ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders are closed and then run AVG A-S.
  • If it is not already selected, click the Scanner icon at the top and then select the Scan Tab.
  • Click "Complete System Scan"
  • While the scan is in progress the PC should be left otherwise idle - so if you fancy a cuppa, now's the time to put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, any threats that AVG A-S has detected will be displayed.
  • Click the Apply all actions button at the bottom.
  • When AVG A-S has finished, it will display the message "All actions have been applied".

    Saving a report:
  • Click the Save Report button at the bottom left and the "Reports" window will open.
  • The content of the scan report will be displayed in the right hand pane and a copy will be automatically saved as Report-Scan-date-time.txt into the C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports folder.
  • You will need to post a copy of this report into your next reply, so if it is more convenient, you can save another copy of this report elsewhere:
    Click the Save report as button and select a destination by clicking the down arrow to the right of the Save in: text box and then click Save.
Close AVG A-S.

9) Remove any/all of the following files/folders that you can find:

Folders

C:\PROGRA~1\NICKAR~1

* The tilde(~) in either a file or folder name indicates that this name is longer than six characters and these have been replaced by the tilde for brevity. E.G. C:\PROGRA~1 = C:\Program Files
The first file, or folder, that uses these particular six letters gets the suffix ~1, the next ~2 and so on.
If in doubt, don't delete!

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\foldertogo
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Double click on Local Disc (C:)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Double click on the System 32 folder,
Right click on foldertogo and from the menu that appears, click on 'Delete'

10) Boot into Normal Mode.

Post a new HJT log, the AVG A-S log, the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt AND a description of how your PC is running.

Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Ignore the use of the "quote" tags, there is a forum glitch that is affecting some of my posts and this is a work-around. You shouldn't need to do the same.

Thank you, it seems to be working so far. Was this a particular mal-ware, AVG a/s did not show a trojan.

Your log doesn't appear to show a software firewall installed - if you have one, and i've missed it, please ignore this.
If you are relying the firewall that comes with Service Pack 2, then you need to install one. While the SP2 firewall is better than nothing, it doesn't monitor outgoing traffic, so anything malicious on your computer can 'phone home' at will.

There are a few free firewalls available.
Zone Alarm: Available here.
Kerio: Available here.
Outpost: Available here.

It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download both to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

Understanding and Using Firewalls: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial60.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Post... the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt
You'll need to let me see this.
Was this a particular mal-ware, AVG a/s did not show a trojan.
This particular piece of slime is a Wareout infection - sometimes referred to as a DNS hijacker. (You can Google if you're interested! :whistling: )
You have an entry in your log that points to a file on your PC that I would like to have checked - if it is still present.
Please go to Jotti's and click on the Browse... button at the top and navigate to the following file and then click on Submit:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ebkp.dll
When all the scans have been completed, please copy and paste the results into your next reply.
If this site is busy, try VirusTotal: Click the Browse ... button at the top, navigate to the file and double click it and then click the Send button.
You may need to set Windows to show All Hidden Files and Folders - Instructions can be found here.
* These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after you have done.
*
If the file isn't there, don't worry. Just let me have the Fixwareout report and after a bit of tidying-up, you're good to go.
1) Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:
O18 - Protocol: ebk - {1E411CE8-FE8B-4973-B8E0-6EA2CC3C6B06} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ebkp.dll
CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
2) Delete this file - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ebkp.dll
You may need to go into Safe Mode to do this, but try Normal Mode first.
Although the file doesn't scan as malicious, Googling shows that other respected HJT helpers remove this entry, and that's good enough for me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Accept the license agreement by clicking the appropriate radio button and then continue.
  • Under Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Enviroment and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'd also like you to do one last thing before you go. I don't know why, but i'm not totally happy with your PC, even though it looks fine - could just be old age!
Download gmer.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to unzip it before you run it.
To do this: Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish
Double click gmer.exe to begin:
  • If you get a message about "system modification", click Yes and work through the rest of the instructions.
  • Ensure that the Rootkit Tab at the top is selected.
  • Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
  • Click the Scan button on the right.
  • When the scan has completed, (you'll have time for a snack and a cuppa!), click the Copy button underneath - this will save the report to your Clipboard.
  • Paste it into Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and save it somewhere convenient.
  • Click the >>> Tab at the top and select the Autostart Tab.
  • Click the Scan button on the right - this one should only take seconds to complete.
  • Save the log as before.
Copy and paste both reports into your next reply - you may need to post them separately.
The Preview option may show the whole logs being posted, but they sometimes get cut down when the actual post is made, so check the post once it is completed.
It's probably nothing, and the feeling in my water is cystitis, but i'd like to be sure.
I've got everything done except for the gmer.exe. When I hit scan, it ran for a minute and then gave me a blue screen error.
The error was Multiple_IRP_Complete_Requests
0x00000044 (0x832F9B50, 0x00000D62, 0x00000000,0x000000000)
The system rebooted without a problem. Is there still a problem?
GMER normally doesn't crash unless there's something making it crash, which doesn't bode well. It isn't infallible however, nothing is, so we'll see what turns up with a couple of scans and take it from there.
Download AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all open programs as this will require a reboot.
  • Double click AVG_AntiRootkit_version number.exe to install the program.
    (By default this will be to C:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta.)
  • Once the program has installed, you will be prompted to reboot - please allow this to happen.
  • When the PC has rebooted, click the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
  • Click Perform in-depth search and put your feet up as this can take a while.
  • Once the scan has completed, if any files have been detected, right click the window and select Save results from the menu that appears.
    Save the file as "AVGRootkit.txt", including the quotation marks, to the location of your choice.
If anything has been detected, copy and paste the log into your next reply. If not, just let me know.
1) Download rootkitrevealer.zip from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s) from the zipped folder.
To do this: Right-click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All...
In the Extraction Wizard window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish
You should now see the contents of the rootkitrevealer folder.
2) Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable.
3) Exit all applications and keep the system otherwise idle during the RootkitRevealer scanning process.
4) Double click RootkitRevealer.exe and click the Scan button to run it.
When the scan has completed, click on File > Save... and then click on the Save button.
The report will be saved as RootkitReveal.txt in the C:\Windows\System 32 folder - copy and paste it into your next reply.
One of the entries in your log points to Boonty games - http://www.castlecop...3list-1744.html
I'm not sure exactly what it's for, and I don't think it is causing the scanners to hang/crash, but it doesn't seem to be what you would want on your machine.
I don't know what removing it will do, so i'd like you to read the information in the CastleCops link and also at the Boonty site and let me know if you want to keep it.
It shouldn't make any difference to your PC itself, but it may affect the games that you have downloaded - assuming that's how you came by the file.
Random/random has been kind enough to take a look at your problem and suggests that you may be infected with the Gromozon rootkit, so we'll give a scanning/removal tool a try and see where that gets us:
1) Download the Gromozon Rootkit Removal Tool by Prevx from here and save it to your Desktop.
2) Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable for the duration of the fix.
3) Double click the file to run the tool.
  • Click Scan to begin.
  • If the tool reports that the infection has been found, allow it to clean it - if not close the tool.
  • If the infection is present, there should be a log produced - let me have a copy.
  • Please note: You do not need to download and install Prevx1 for the tool to work.
Let me know how you get on.
Removal tool loaded into memory
Gromozon rootkit component not detected - searching for other components
Scanning: C:\WINDOWS
Scanning: C:\Program Files\Common Files
Trojan.Gromozon does not exist - your system is clean.
This report was generated after it removed the rootkit.
I tried to run rootkit revealer and it still stalled on the same file.
Thanks for all your help. It is greatly appreciated. What's next?
So it originally detected the rootkit on your system?
Will you see if GMER will run now - if it gives you a message that "rootkits have been found" (or similar) when you start it up, make a note of any entries in red and then have it run a scan.
I'd like the entries exactly as they appear, if they do, and the log - if you get it to run.
