Hello,

After days of using various malware removal tools, antispyware and antivirus scans, and manually locating and removing identified malware in the Windows Registry, I’m only partially successful. Panda Active Scan (free online scan) is the only antivirus scan (out of 8 free online antivirus scans) identifying the same malware on my computer: Hacktool mhtredir.gen and Adware cws, Adware ieplugin, and Adware ist.istbar. I do get an occasional popup, but I’m unable to locate and remove these threats given the references I researched. I’m also wondering if these are false positives? Here is what I have done so far:

For adware/ieplugin: Symantec’s FxIeplgn.exe removal tool for IE Plugin deleted 19 files and fixed 7 registry entries, but I was unable to find any of the identified .dll and the multi-page modified registry entries for this adware to follow through with the manual removal to its completion (tedious and no progress - gave up).

For adware/ist.istbar: Symantec’s FxIstbar.exe removal tool did not find the adware Ist.istbar on my computer identified by Panda Active Scan. I also searched and didn’t see any of the half of the multi-page subkey values identified by Symantec (tedious and no progress - gave up).

For adware/cws: I ran Trendmicro CWShredder, but there was no unwanted bookmarks or insidious browser hijackers identified.

For Exploit-mhtredir.gen: I followed Symantec's manual removal instructions for this malware, which is identified as backdoor.nibu.d trojan horse, but the instructions do not apply in my case. I could neither loate the relevant .exe files nor find the matching changes made to the registry to reverse them.

Three different updated anti-spyware scans found only the usual cookies and none of the four identified threats. The up-to-date adware scans I used were: Ad-Aware SE (Safe Mode), AVG (Safe Mode), and Superantispyware (Normal Mode as instructed).

Eight free online antivirus scans was used, and Panda Active Scan was the only one to identify the same infected files. The seven online antivirus scans I used in addition to Panda Active Scan were: Symantec, Trendmicro, McAfee, BidDefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky, and AVG Antivirus (new build as of 2/18).

I’ve done all the required preparatory work as per geekstogo.com before scanning and posting the hijackthis log: ran AFT Cleaner, created a new System Restore point, ran 2 antispyware/adware scans, 2 antivirus scans, Windows update is up to date.

I have all the scanned reports and logs saved prior to running hijackthis should you ask for them. Would you kindly take a look at my antivirus scan log from Panda Software and my HijackThis log and advise what I should do with these real or false positive threats? Here are my Panda Active Scan and HijackThis logs:

Thank you for your assistance. Over the past week, I uninstalled software (Learn2 Player) and ran additional antispyware and antivirus scans, but Panda Active Scan continues to report the same four threats. I googled for information but I was unable to identify software SC130 in Add/Remove and confirm Logitech Desktop Manager is a spyware and if they are related to the infection, so I have not uninstalled these two programs. Here is my latest Hijackthis log.

You will want to print out these instructions, or save them to notepad so that you can refer to them later.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Next, download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

I hope there is no difference in using CCleaner or ATF Clearner. I ran CCleaner instead of ATF Cleaner.

FYI: Other than the occasional tracking cookies, AVG reported the same result - "nothing found" for the past eight or so antispyware scans I ran. Here was the latest and the corresponding AVG Antispyware report.

If AVG AS didn't find them, I think they're false positives. Just to be on the safe side though, I would like to see a log from the Panda scan.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan. You will need to use Internet Explorer to run it.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

I also ran Panda Active Scan over twleve times since the first report of the four threats, and the last report was the same as the first one. It's picking up the same four threats. Here is the latest Active Scan log from Panda:

You can delete the following items:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites\Health
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Computer\Malware\on Windows XP\Adware\SpySheriff\smitRem\smitRem.exe

Are you experiencing any problems with your computer? Popups, excessive slowness, etc? If not, I'm thinking that Panda is hitting on faint traces of a previous infection that are just this side of detectable, but nothing to pose a risk.

Hi Ryan,

If I deleted C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites\Health, will I lose my bookmarks in IE6.0? This Favorite folder is a big and time-consuming compilation for me and I would rather not lose it.

Also, Is Panda's identified BHO number for mhtredir.gen infection not significant?

I don't have any apparant computer performance problems or excessive popups.

Is my hijackthis log clean then and I should just ignor the four identified threats in the future?

As long as you delete only the Health item from the bookmarks, you shouldn't lose them all.

The mhtredir.gen targets a vulnerability that Microsoft patched back in 2004, so as long as you have kept up to date with the Windows Updates, you should be fine.

I noticed that you have SmitRem on the computer. Although this was a good tool, it hasn't been updated in a while, so I'd like you to run another tool that is used to fight smitfruad.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Also, please post an uninstall listOpen HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough about the Health bookmarks. My Health bookmark folder is a rather large collection which consists of numerous folders and links. I haven't deleted the entire Health bookmark folder yet, because I am hoping we can find a way to scan or locate the file/s or the subfolder infected by Adware CWS. Please confirm.

OK. In that case, Panda's reporting a false positive.

With the fact that the other scans aren't showing anything infected, I have the feeling that everything Panda is reporting are false positives as well.

Congratulations, your log is clean :whistling:

So, does my HijackThis log look clean and support or confirm that all four are most likely false positives as well?

Do you have a preference between using SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard and between Kerio and Zone Alarm on Window XP?

I also need to get a firewall for my Windows 98. There shouldn't be a problem using different firewall software on two different computer right?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, the HiJack This log looks clean. If Panda is the only product picking up threats, then I feel certain that they are false positives. If other products were also picking up on them, I would be concerned, but with only one product fiding them, plus the fact that you said you weren't experiencing any problems, I feel that you are clean.

As for firewall, I use Kerio on most of my computers (the other computer doesn't have any firewall since it doesn't connect to the internet). I feel that it uses less resources than ZoneAlarm.

You can have both SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard installed at the same time as they perform different functions and complement each other.

Hi Ryan,

I just realized something about Adware.IEPlugin. IEPlugin cannot be a false positive because Symantec's FxIeplgin.exe removal tool deleted nineteen files and fixed seven registry entries (see my first post); however, I could not locate any of the .exe, .dll, .ico, and .pst files identified and most of the values in the registry subkeys by Symantec manually.

Trendmicro Housecall scan also identified a malware in my Health bookmark about six months ago but not now, which may correlate wth Adware.cws.

I uninstalled some programs and deleted a few entries in HJT log and somehow managed to eliminate Exploit mhtredir.gen.

I had CCleaner fix Windows registry and then ran 4 online AV scans and one real-time AV scan (AVG) last night, Panda is still the only one identifying three malware: Adware.istbar, IEPlugin, and cws.

Given the information, is there anything else we can do to clean up a bit more, at least on Adware IEPlugin (or adware.cws)?
